The person who created the video has been involved in restoring a Panther that ended up in a river in Poland, no doubt facing west and heading for the Reich.
There are pics of the inside of the transmission and they are indeed straight cut gears. There are also some engine build videos. The HL230 had roller main bearings and was not counterweighted. The Panther was inspired by the T34, so it is said, but the Germans rejected the notion of copying the T34 and they also didn't have a good diesel engine in that class. If I had to take a guess having roller bearings might have made the HL230 a little easier to start in cold weather. The Panther was also thirsty.
