Colin didn't come out till the end game and had good reason for not supporting the GOP who never really listened to him when he was sec of state ( too bad might have been a very different world had his input been taken seriously ) .

As for this campaign cycle I think they should limit the process to something like six weeks instead of the two years plus this fiasco has been going on. enforce the rule that canidates get equal time if they are going to cover it ionstead of the obviously one sided coverage that this one had, make people not spend more than a limited amount ( cuts down the damn political ads) and require the candidates to actually say what they are actually going to do instead of the promise her anything but do whatever you like once elected ( maybe a vote of confidence like the parliamentary system to remove power from those who do not do what they ran on ) .

Might also be a good idea to actually require that election boards get the voting thing right or not allow voting in their districts since obviously eight years sholould have solved the problems but seems no0t to have been done by a lot of boards of election meaning they are either not doing their job or deliberately keeping things where they can manipulate the system on election day.

The GOP probably should have chosen Colin Powell as a presidential candidate even though he really doesn't want the job ( knows too much about the problems it entails ) but they went a different way instead and we got W who for all his record of crossing party lines while a governor got sucked into the power play the gop was involved in while they were controlling nboth houses of congress ( not that he had any choice if he wanted to get anythiong done he needed to go with the party running things there ).
Whoever wins this one will most likely need to deal with one of the most reactionary congresses in decades if the expected democrat victory in both senate and house commes to pass and they go back to the same old programs that got us into this mess over the last three or four decades and which were in part at least adopted by the republicans when they got control.
Should be an interesting two or four year period in any case unless you have an oil well or a gold mine in your back yard and are recession proof......
