Powell has kept his political affiliations closely guarded.
People assumed that since he served in Bush's cabinet that he
was a card carrying republican. Powell has never said
he was. During the 1996 republican convention in San Diego,
convention organizers made sure that the media was kept away
from Lindbergh Field where most of the corporate jets carrying
the big wheels came in. Corporate jets have always been
the transport of choice for politicians on both sides of the
aisle, especially those low enough in the pecking order as not
to have full-time access to an Air Force jet. Rick Santorum's
use a Wal-Mart jet during the Terri Schiavo
crisis was newsworthy. Media photographers had to set up on
hillside some distance away from Lindbergh Field and use
telephoto lenses to see who was alighting from the corporate
jets and to read the tail numbers on the aircraft. Powell
had retired from the army and did not hold government office
during 1996, although as a retired 4-star general he probably did have access to Air Force jets. Powell flew to
San Diego on the Pfizer jet and that left people wondering what sort of relationship Powell had with the drug
giant. Perhaps they wanted him to become their pitchman for
Viagra. But Powell's use of corporate jets was seen
as substantial evidence of where his partisan sympathies
lay. So Powell's endorsement of Obama surprised some although others weren't surprised. McCain likes to surround
himself with military people but he was never able to draw
close to the wily Powell. McCain turned to Patraeus as his
military hero figure and showering him with praise as the
contemporary MacArthur. Powell is probably content
with the rubber chicken circuit and tinkering on his
collection of Volvos and keeping his distance from McCain.
McCain's embrace of Patraeus has only forced the general
to act like the holographic doctor from Star Trek Voyager who keeps having to say I'm a doctor, not
a doorstop, I'm a doctor, not a battery, I'm a doctor, not
a shoe salesman
and on and on. Patraeus keeps saying,
I'm a soldier, not a politician.

....Fred
