Janet Walsh’s father was a victim of Alzheimer’s disease, and therefore she saw herself as a potential candidate for the illness. When she learns about a possible genetic test for Alzheimer’s, she jumps at the chance to see at last whether she is indeed a potential patient. The test results came back that Janet is high-risk Alzheimer’s prospect with a 50-99 % chance of contracting the disease. This news must have been very difficult for Janet and her family. Already faced with the death of one Alzheimer’s victim, they will probably have to undergo a second case. At least Janet and her family are forearmed with this knowledge and they have a chance to prepare for the inevitable. Now her children understand there is a great possibility that they may develop the disease and can live their lives without regrets. They have the option of deciding whether to pass this gene onto their children or avoiding the chance of their children’s affliction with Alzheimer’s and just adopting. Janet and her family can undergo counseling to prevent feelings of anger or guilt. They can explore treatment options, current research, and Janet’s final wishes. With early knowledge of Janet’s fate, there can be a feeling closure as she deteriorates unlike the situation of her father’s gradual death.
