Whether or not it was a good reason for Janet to be tested is left up to Janet herself to determine. Because she is the one who made the decision to be tested, she of course decided that her reasoning was good enough to constitute such a test. Janet's family, as well, are people who will be feeling the emotional stress and effects of the diagnosis determined from the testing, so they of course are entitled to their own opinions about whether Janet exhibited good reasoning when considering to be tested. Although Alzheimer's has no known cure, a person like Janet may test positive and consquently decided to devote herself to working toward a cure for the disease. From another persepective, it may be easier for some people, maybe even Janet in this case, to live with the knowledge that she would acquire Alzheimer's in the future as opposed to living in constant worrysome uncertainty about whether or not she had the gene that promised the Alzheimer's disease. The unknown often provides more emotional stress than the knowledge of getting such a terrible, degenerative disease.
