There are many ways in which Janet may be better able to confront the risk to herself and her family. Knowing that she has the APOE marker gene, and that she passed it on to her children, she can look into experimental treatment or clinical trials. As we saw in the video, the one family had a son named Zachary who had gene therapy so that he might not have to live in a bubble. Janet may be able to find some sort of gene therapy for her children to undergo while they are still young. Janet and her family can live a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious food and exercising. Although this lifestyle will not prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s, it may delay it or make the disease easier to live with for a period of time. Knowing that Janet has the APOE gene, the family can seek genetic counseling. According to Norman Relkin, Janet may be placing too much emphasis on the fact that she has the APOE gene when other factors contribute to Alzheimer’s as well. Having genetic counseling early on can prepare Janet and her family for the future they have ahead of them.
