I think that it was up to Janet to decide whether or not she wanted to get tested for Alzheimer’s because at the moment, she is the one who is at the highest risk for being affected since her father had it. The test would help her as well as her family prepare themselves for Alzheimer’s instead of having it come as a shock (even though she knew the possibility existed because her father died from it).Ultimately, I think that the family should make a well informed decision on whether or not to get tested together since the test will affect her children as well since it shows the genes that they have inherited.
In the case that Janet wants the test, but her family does not want her to get it done, I believe that Janet should get it done for her own sake and then not tell her family the results. The morals/ethics of this may be somewhat questionable, but Janet is the one who is most closely related to the disease, therefore I believe that she has the right to know herself.
All in all, the family should weigh the pros and cons of genetic testing and decide what is best for them. A bad reason for genetic testing is that it reveals the genes of the rest of the family and they may not want to know this information.
Genetic testing can relieve some of the burden of worrying, yet it can also make others come to a fast realization of a new reality that they are going to have to face.
