Since Janet spent most of her adult life preparing herself for Alzheimer’s, then I believe that she know that there is a chance that she is actually preparing herself for the “worst-case scenario” (even though that was the last thing she really hoped for or even expected). However, even after all of the pre-preparation, I don’t think that Janet anticipated that she would be placed along with the 2% of the population that is at high risk for the genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s. I think that Janet’s family already knows that there is a good chance that she could be afflicted with Alzheimer’s so it will not be a total shock to them when she gives them her test results. The part that may surprise them is the severity of the condition, that Janet will mot likely will be afflicted with it because she inherited the gene from both her mother and her father. Janet should tell her family everything that she learned about herself from the test results so that it will not be a total shock to them later. She should explain everything that goes along with the disease starting with symptoms all the way to the emotional effects. Janet’s children now have to make the decision whether or not they want to know if they inherited the gene from their mother. At this point, I believe that the family should spend as much time together as possible. The burden of Alzheimer’s is a tough one, but they should enjoy their mother’s company before the disease gets progressively worse.
