I think that only an individual herself can decide if there is a good reason to be tested. Before making this decision a person should gather information, talk to a doctor, study her family tree and think about the consequences that knowing the test results could have on her family and herself. In this case, Janet assumed that she was at a high risk. The genetic testing confirmed her fear. But, it could have happened that the results disproved her fears, and relieved a tremendous amount of stress from her life. So, in a sense, it was worth taking for this possibility. Also, Janet wanted to protect or at least prepare her family for the pain she went through. This is a good reason. Watching your mother or wife’s body and mind deteriorate is a very difficult thing to do. A lot of emotional stress is placed on the family. By knowing earlier she has the chance of being afflicted, the family can prepare emotionally and physically for the task of caring for her. I think they should prepare for her becoming afflicted with the disease but don’t over value the test results. Just because she has the APOE gene and was categorized on the “worst case scenario” for risk does not mean she will be afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. On the other hand, some bad reasons to get the test results would be this information are to use it to get attention or to dwell on it and feel depressed and hopeless about it.
