Regina makes several important points in her statement. She says that if she were Janet, she would explain to them all about the implications of Alzheimer's. She also states that if they were too young to fully comprehend the seriousness of the situation, she would wait until they were old enough to consult with them on the decision. Regina lastly states that the individual should always have the final say, though family members can have some imput because the disease will affect them too.
I agree with all of the points made by Regina. Janet did have a valid reason for getting tested, because she found out that her children are carrying the gene. And untimately, the patient with the potential to be afflicted should always have the final say on whether or not to get tested. Granted, family members are affected as well by the ramifications of the potential disease. They must deal with watching their loved one gradually deteriorate, and try to keep their loved one's spirits, as well as trying to keep themselves together. But the individual with the potential for the genetic disease should, in all cases, have the final say.
