If I were counseling a patient, I would try to be as positive and helpful as possible to deal with the emotional factors. I would try to reassure a patient in Janet�s case that she still has time to live out her life and achieve the goals she has set for herself. Janet is not yet diagnosed with Alzheimer�s disease, only the information that she has a 50 to 99 percent risk of developing the disease. I would try to encourage my patient to spend as much time as possible with their family and children if they have any. If Janet were my patient, I would encourage her to not refer to herself as �pre-Alzheimer�s� as well as any patient. I would try to teach my patient that they might not have a disease or genetic disorder that is predetermined. They may develop the disorder over their lifetime and it may not be caused by an inherited gene. Overall, I would try to be as upbeat as I can no matter how negative the patient may be .
