If I were counseling a patient, I would try to be as positive and helpful as possible to deal with the emotional factors. I would try to reassure a patient in Janet’s case that she still has time to live out her life and achieve the goals she has set for herself. Janet is not yet diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, only the information that she has a 50 to 99 percent risk of developing the disease. I would try to encourage my patient to spend as much time as possible with their family and children if they have any. If Janet were my patient, I would encourage her to not refer to herself as “pre-Alzheimer’s” as well as any patient. I would try to teach my patient that they might not have a disease or genetic disorder that is predetermined. They may develop the disorder over their lifetime and it may not be caused by an inherited gene. Overall, I would try to be as upbeat as I can no matter how negative the patient may be .
