The family issues that arise in genetic testing should definitely be addressed by some form of counseling. Tina, I agree that it is not the role of the primary medical physician to provide that counseling, but the hospital or institution should provide some type of help or refer the patient to others. I believe that the psychology and physical health of the body are intertwined, so it would be impossible for a patient to fight a disease like Alzheimer’s while harboring feelings of guilt and anger toward her mother. So although the medical doctor should not be counseling the patient about psychological issues, both the counselor and the medical doctor should work closely together to help the patient as much as possible.
