I suspect also that, under the original spell, when the current Slayer is killed the Potential who is empowered is 'selected' in part because she possesses exactly those characteristics which lead her to making the personal sacrifices necessary. Buffy's primary distinction (as far as we know) is that she didn't always agree that the sacrifices the Watchers' Council declared were necessary were indeed so and pretty much ignored them when it came to never having a personal life, or friends, or allies.
