He said basically, yep. it's inconsistent, but he was tired, so he said screw it and decided to ignore it. Since he's always put emotional impact ahead of the internal consistency of his universe, that was hardly surprising, but now, we're stuck with fanwanking it.

I always thought the easiest way would have been to connect the ubervasmps' loss of strength to Willow's spell. Willow drew power from the earth, which is where the Hellmouth is located, right? And the Slayers' power had a demonic component. So, when the spell went into effect, it drew its power from the ubervamps,and all other hellbeasties, presumably, weakening them enough to make them at least temporarily more killable. Even by humans, evidently, since all the scoobies were dispatching them. too.
