So solid characters abandon their fiancé at the alter and then have the balls to try to take the moral high ground when she has solace sex with Spike? Xander was always quick to judge the actions of his “good friends” regardless of the context (see Buffy in Dead Mans Party, Willow in Dopplegangland and Seeing Blue etc). His hostility to Angel and Spike was that of not a normal one but a small minded bigot. He was invariably judgmental, vindictive, and quick to pile on his supposed friend whenever they failed to meet his expectations. As far as true friends, I think Tara’s reaction to Buffy having sex with Spike was one of a true friend, not Xander’s condemnation. When your friend is going through emotional difficulty, you offer empathy, not condemnation. You might point out where they went wrong but only at the proper time, not when they are in crisis (and maybe only if they ask for your input) Whenever the Scoobies were hurting emotionally and need some empathy and support from one another, you could count on Xander to lecture them. As if he was such a model of proper behavior. What really irritated me about Xander was that he was quick to point out everyone else’s missteps but was totally lacking in self awareness. He was of the “Do as I saw, not as I do” school. In short a complete hypocrite. The discussion was about the characters journey and we agree that Xander did not go on any journey. The only difference is that you think the 16 year old clown was already a shining example of goodness , I certainly do not.
