Subject: The Season 6 blues

I was listening to the audio commentary by Noxon and Fury (I think it was Fury) during the episodes Bargaining 1&2 and I was a little suprised about all the things they tried as writers to make things funny and clever during the episode(s) that just didn't work. I didn't think they worked either. I was just suprised they made air even as I watched them the first time during their original airdates.

I had always had a theory that Mr. Whedon had begun some what of a phase out somewhere in Season 5 to 6 and they seemed to indicate this in not so many words. He was still involved just not as much. He was definately the sharp witted and funny guy whose input transformed typical episodes into exceptional ones.

Season 6 left me pretty cold and more disinterested in the show. Its fine to claim "life is the big bad" and "growing up sucks" or whatever but I don't think the season fairly reflected the real balance of happiness and sadness of real life. They went for the negative drama and it negatively effected the show. Life isn't all bad or all good but you couldn't tell it by this season. Many of the writers have said that "life is the big bad" and "growing up sucks" and "responsibility time" were the arcs for the season but they just went too negative. Buffy was a comedic-horror-drama it unfortunately became a horror-drama. It was unfortunate. I still liked the show but the negative turn of Season 6 was too extreme and, with the loss of Giles, just too much too keep the show aloft among the first 5 seasons.

The loss of the Giles character will be the subject of my next post.
