I agree, Constance. It's very difficult to "come back" from the death of someone close to us (even if the relationship wasn't exactly heaven), let alone from our own, if that could happen. Jewish mourning practices give people nearly a year to come out of mourning & fully participate in life again. I thought it was entirely appropriate that it took Buffy so long & was so hard for her. I'd say it also works pretty well as a metaphor for growing up & having to deal w/all the responsibilities you used to have parents or other grown-ups to do for you or at least help you with, whether they're still around or not.
