I agree also. One thing I loved about the show was that things took the right amount of time to develop and to dissipate. Buffy was still checking in the morning to see if her newest lover had bailed two years after Angel did it to her, and her ability to trust anyone completely in love was gone forever. Willow's descent took years. So did Spike's climb into the light. Buffy's depression took months to get over, as it should have.

One thing is mentioned in a commentary somewhere. Marti, I believe, said they didn't recognize that the cumulative effect from having several downward spirals in the same season would be so strong. I would agree that the season would have been less depressing if you had other people not going through turmoil at the same time Buffy was. Viewers would have had a refuge somewhere. For me, I didn't enjoy it at the time, but I do now, and I always thought it's emotional complexity and honesty was a major plus.
