With Angel you need to persevere until the end of S2 beginning of S3. At this point you will be hooked, and will have no problem watching all the way to the end of S5.

One of the problems with early Angel is that there just aren't enough core characters. I believe Joss mentions this mistake on a commentary somewhere. Anyway, this problem is sorted out by S3.
