Where do you think Angel's emotional development is going this year, so far?
I decided to try to respond to your question, at the risk of exposing myself as a fool (but then that boat left the dock long ago). Angel seems to be profoundly lost. He is fixated on the Senior Partners as the cause of the chaos. It has not been a particularly happy year for Angel. He was not able to help the shaman, no progress with Nina, he has alienated Gunn, he seems paranoid and oscillates between giving orders and sitting inert. The only positive, or at least non-negative, development was with Connor. Connor, although having some problems when his parents realized the memory deception, seems to be relatively safe and even at peace. However, there is no ongoing relationship with Connor so not much help there. It has gotten so bad that Spike appears to be the voice of reason and moderation. Season 6 Angel reminds me somewhat of pre-Epiphany season 2 Angel except he appears even more confused and unfocused. Angel suspects everyone, he is absolutely convinced that the Senior Partners are responsible for the chaos. I could see him launching off on a single vampire crusade, much as he did in season 2, but that would require more energy and resolve than he is currently demonstrating. He should be thankful that Spike is hanging with him as Spike seems to be his only anchor to reality. What is wrong with Angel? Well I can guess: He needs to blame the SP’s and see conspiracy wherever he turns because otherwise, he might have to consider the possibility that it was his actions in NFA that are the cause of the chaos. Not a comfortable realization for our champion. If you are going to go out in a grand “burn down the house” attack, you should at least have the good sense to die while doing so. Coming back to pick up the pieces (Pieces – we have to pick up the pieces. Our job sucks!) isn’t all that grand. If it is not the SP’s, what should Angel do to help resolve the problems? Don’t think he has a clue. I think you all have placed Angel in a precarious position. We have Spike trying to snap him back to reality, Gunn off doing the United Nations thing (now Gunn’s journey is incredible – a continuation of the development of season 5 but even more so. He has come full circle, or more correctly spiral, as he is back to organizing as we first saw him but now is so much more than he was), Lorne and Anne helping Gunn. Everyone, with the exception of Illyria, seems to have a better plan to address the anarchy than does Angel. He doesn't currently look like much of a champion.

I hope these impressions aren’t completely off the mark; if they are, it is no doubt my failings, not yours.

P.S. So what is happening with Fred/Illyria? Anxious to learn of her/his/its resolution.
