I think the story is told. The story that began with Firefly finished here. I think there could be more, and might be, but for franchise reasons only. I think Serenity gave us completion for Firefly, but for BtVS and Angel too.

I would love more, and would pay for more, but the sense I get is that Whedon's need to tell Mal's story ended here. He might go to the other characters for future stories, and may have set stuff up here, but what he wanted to do with Firefly is done.

He has beaten back the Reavers as metaphor for the television industry who left him dangling out in space with the cancellation of Firefly. He got his movie, he showed them. Maybe the Operative had a change of face, because now the television industry will have to see him differently now that he has made a movie and has gone way past them. He knows he can't kill them, Mal didn't kill the operative, but Whedon silenced them, if just for a little while.
