The Joss-staple bit, certainly. This reminded me of Jonathan in 'Conversations with Dead People'- just when he was beginning to understand how to live, after seeing him for six long, hard years...

I take your point on why Wash says it in terms of the simple psychology. I think what I was searching for was something a bit more structural- why does Whedon write this line? Usually it feels like a line of comedy, a line of background, a line of emotion, a line of character development. Here I wasn't given an anchor, (soaring with as much control as a leaf on the wind), until the poetry revealed itself.

Perhaps I'm searching for something which other people wouldn't consider worth discovering, but then, if it's worth discovering to me... ;-)
