My 'already' was, once again, anchorless, but was meant to make the point that you make mroe clearly: that the leaf is dead as soon as it starts to soar. In taking on something as difficult as Wash does, he has in a sense already killed himself. Sad, yet true.

Cod in the sense I'm using it means 'an attempt at', 'a misunderstanding of'. I think.
