I agree that Spike was not at all interested in any apocalypse, especially since he and Buffy had a thing going. I do not think the Suvolte egg caper was set up as an apocalyptic type scenario as the eggs were to be sold to agents of a foreign military to be used as demon soldiers. Still, I tend to agree with you that Spike was probably not the Doctor as I share Buffy’s contention that he was way too incompetent to pull that off plus I can’t imagine Spike having contacts with any foreign military. I do think Spike knew what he was doing was in fact evil but that is just Spike. However, at the end of the episode, Riley certainly thought Spike was the Doctor and Buffy did not seem to argue the point so as far as who the Doctor was, all we can conclude is – nothing solid.
My original point was not that Spike was evil but that he had a somewhat unreliable moral compass but still had many “human” qualities. I think his actions in “As You Were” would support that position.
