My take on it, is that even when Spike was fully evil, a mass-casualty causing, potentially apocalyptic plot ( say that three times fast) wasn't something he'd be interested in, unless he was causing the casualties personally. OTOH, doing a small, possibly shady job in exchange for money is something he would be interested in, especially considering Buffy's money problems - which he'd offered to help her with in "Doublemeat Palace". He WAS guilty of extreme stupidity, but I don't think he was the "Doctor".
