I definitely agree with you regarding Buffy and Riley’s different goals in the relationship. I think that what finally drove Riley away was when Buffy did not call him when Joyce was admitted to the hospital. Even if Riley could of or would of settled for dependable, Buffy was sending the message that he was not even needed in that role. I think most people want that passionate bring down the walls kind of love. I also think most people realize that the passion is not enough in the long run. One needs to be needed. I think Riley felt that he was not needed, not in any fundamental way. I am not sure that Buffy necessarily needed to change in order to save the relationship. I think, at least for a start, all she needed to do was tell Riley “I need you, you are important to me, please do not leave”. I think she did need him and he was important to her but the lack of communication got in the way. Buffy and Riley’s communication problem was long running and was the subject of several scenes in several episodes. The breakup in ITW was just a culmination of this long festering problem. Xander’s intervention was an attempt to break through those barriers. Give his usual actions when it came to emotional issues with Buffy, I give him credit here.
