Subject: Interesting point -- Xander was echoing Spike's advice on love
In reply to: Finn Mac Cool 's message, "Riley's choices were also somewhat limited, however" on 11:42:28 10/31/05 Mon

Riley was looking for someone he could love and who would love him passionately, the "blood over brains" romance Spike talked about in "Lover's Walk."

Excellent comparison. It's interesting that Xander, who detests Spike, would have the same view of love. Or at least express the same view of love; I don't think Xander actually demonstrated that (Willow did). The interesting thing about Spike in LW was that his speech -- which I love, btw -- was subverted just 4 episodes earlier:

Mr. Platt: Look, lots of people lose themselves in love. It's, it's no shame. They write songs about it. The hitch is, you can't stay lost. Sooner or later, you... you have to get back to yourself.

Buffy: (considers) And if you can't?

Mr. Platt: If you can't... (inhales) Well, love becomes your master, and you're just its dog.

Spike's speech worked because we all recognized that B/A actually WAS a messy, no-holds-barred relationship. I doubt many people saw her relationship with Riley the same way, which may be part of the problem with Xander's otherwise similar advice.
