- oh those solo dresses -- feismommi (the (usually) joyful), 11:49:06 12/01/09 Tue
hi all,
i have a newly minted prizewinner girl for whom i recently bought her first solo dress. (our school has its own novice dresses, so does not allow solo dresses until PW). we searched on all the websites, and found a beautiful used Gavin Doherty 3-panel for $450. (i hasten to add that i paid this for my wedding dress! we have 2 other children who do a lot of activites too, plus my dancing DD is also s competitive figure skater, with all the outfits and footwear to go with that...) the dress is pale blue with sequin overlay, pastel flower, crystals. etc. It is really beautiful and simple, and suits her young age and personality. all was well, until...
she saw some girls at other feisiana who were all wearing those newer styles--puffballs, ruffles, wraps, etc.--and they all had very bright colors. now she is convinced that she is "hopelessly out of date" and that she is never going to be noticed by judges, win anything, etc. (We will be debuting the new dress in january). her best friend, who happens to have unlimited financial means, is having a custom Gavin made, and of course it will have all the latest bells and whistles.
our family sacrifices (willingly and happily) a lot of $$, time, and resources to pay for DD's skating and dancing, and we simply have no more to spend than the 400-500 that i paid. how can i help my DD feel positive aobut her choice, about herself, and not get caught up in a crazy competitive spiral? any ideas?

accomodation for the world irish championships -- an overseas dancers mother, 23:36:56 10/11/04 Mon
We are thinking of coming over with our daughter for the Worlds as it is the third time she has qualified. It is rather overwhelming to think of all that has to be organised. We are looking for reasonably priced accomodation and wondering if anyone could point us in the right direction. Also if you have competed in the Worlds , it would be nice to know a bit of what happens etc. We know that the general reaction is that it is awesome. At this stage it is only Mum & DD. We would be looking for accomodation from the week before & for the duration of the Comp. An E-mail address would be lovely too for my Daughter to catch up with one of your dancing daughters. Cheers & thanks ..... in anticipation

- To dress or not to dress -- Heather Kirkpatrick, 12:24:21 11/10/04 Wed
I am battling with the notion of whether to dress my daughter up in all the gear or not. I was told that once a dancer places and moves into Novice that she would need to buy a solo dress and and the such. In her past feis she placed 2nd and 3rd in two out of three dances. She is all excited and very motivated to keep going. She currently wears a junior/school dress with her hair up in a bun. I think she looks just beautiful!! I just don't want her to feel left out. SO to buy her a solo dress...hmmmm...

I just moved into a new house and it has a full basement. I really want to put a good sized floor down there to practice, but not directly on the concrete. I'm just getting over a bad injury so I need padding of some sort. Does anyone have any recommendations of what to use for padding under a raised wooden floor or know of a source for directions for a sprung dance floor? Thank you.

- Check on their web site......perhaps it depends on your dancers (more..) -- Kate, 04:26:42 05/17/04 Mon
- My dd recently transfered schools & she had to pay a new registration fee. Even thou she pd one in the Fall w/ another school it was for that school only. So, she had to pay again to let Ireland know what school she belongs too now. (NT) -- DM, 21:39:28 05/17/04 Mon
- Like Kate said above, you can try to check with one of the governing organizations. But as far as I know your school can charge whatever they want to register a student. There is no direct payment made to any teacher's organization on a per student basis. Teacher must pay and join various organizations in order for your children to compete. CLRG doesn't keep a list of what dancers are in what school, nor do any of the other teachers organizations. (NT) -- ask other teachers too, 16:17:42 05/19/04 Wed
- There is a fee to the organization, I think it's 25 per dancer, but not sure. Your new teacher will fill you in and make sure you do everything right. (NT) -- ..., 07:34:18 05/22/04 Sat
- I am an ID teacher and have run transfers through, there is no fee involved, just fill in a piece of paper -- me, 21:51:09 06/21/04 Mon
- Re: transfer fees -- Oh my you guys R gettign ripped off, 23:57:59 07/30/04 Fri
- If you are talking about the "fee" when you send it your paperwork to the regional secretary, then yes there is a fee. It is $25 to transfer. As for a fee payable to the school you are transfering to, well that is just a scam and maybe you should look into another school. My daughter transfered a bit ago, paid the $25 but nothing to the new school. -- Transfered parent, 19:04:20 10/02/04 Sat

Hi, I am looking for used irish dancing hard shoes (for tap dancing) of size 8.5 or 9 (for man) of UK size system. The price should be based on wear and tear of shoes. For being absolutely sure of fitting on my foot, I would require if you can send me an inner size of shoe from tiptoe to heel (in milimeters). I know length of my foot, so I can decide if this size is suitable for me. If you have such pair of hard shoes and you don't need it, I would be glad to buy it from you. Just wanted to say that moving my son up to Prelims was a really good thing for him. Many of you had suggested this and it is the best thing. He actually won his first Prelim comp, had five so it counts! We honestly didn't think he would win it-LOL! I am kind of hoping he doesn't win any more for a while so he can dance with the girls for a bit. He will be combined with U10's in the next two feis, so he prpabably won't win those. It is nice for him to see that he is good enough to dance against the girls.

- Not ID related, but wanted to anonymously get opinions from other moms. -- upset, 12:16:19 07/19/04 Mon
My 9 yr old daughter and I were talking, and the topic of stranger danger came up. The conversation took a tangent, and it turned out she had questions about the facts of life. I really didn't want to initiate this talk yet, but wanted to try to answer her questions honestly (on a fairly high level that was age appropriate). I talked to her about the whole "good touch, bad..." scenario, and told her to always come to me if she ever encountered a situation where she felt uncomfortable. She then told me that one of her friends had confided such a situation. It was clear that an older boy had made advances (details not important). My daughter's friend indicated that she was afraid to tell her own mother.
I was uncomfortable and conflicted, but felt I had to call the girl's mother. Did I do the right thing? Did I overstep the bounds? Has anyone ever dealt with this situation, and if so, do you have advice on how to deal with it?

- Boys Costumes -- Me, 05:23:29 06/17/04 Thu
I've noticed since getting my son involved in Irish Dancing that the boys costumes have changed considerably since I danced oooh sooo long ago. You no longer see them in kilts and jackets, but in pants and cummberbuns. I've tried to find a place where you can still get the kilts made, but to no avail. Does anyone have any information where boys kilts can be made? They look so sharp on stage in the "old style" outfits when standing next to todays modern costumes.

I would really like to talk with some of you moms of young boys who have advanced fairly quickly in ID. So often I feel like I have only a few people to share my particular experience with. My son is U8, has only been dancing 3 yrs and is close to being in Prelims. He has little competiton in most feisanna in PW. It is a really different perspective for me than for the girl moms who are always praying for smaller comps. I always hope they will combine the boy comps!! This board seems rather quiet, but if there are some of you out there, I would love to correspond. Thanks

Dancing Floors -- zz, 11:41:26 05/20/04 Thu
Has anyone else thought of the welfare of our dancers when competing on substandard floors? Has anyone considered petitioning the Commission(s)to pass a regulation so that EVERY competition (local and international) provide a safe environment for our children? We teach and encourage our dancers to not "hold back" when competing and then we sit and watch dancer after dancer fall - some to the point of injury. Is it fair to put our children in these circumstances and expect them not to be afraid of falling yet place well? Am I the only one who feels that the dancing organizations have a RESPONSIBILITY to provide Marle/Harlequin flooring for ALL competitions? Should we as parents start a petition circulating at competitions so that they can change the situation for the better?

wedding and shower -- Marie, 12:19:30 02/29/04 Sun
I would like to know what is a nice gift to give my daughter from ME and my handicaped daughter. WE are on a limited amount of income. My daughter will be having a bridal shower given by her boyfriends sister in law, and my daughter and her boyfriend will be paying for the wedding and reception out of there own money.
I am thinking I would give 200 from my daughter and me for her shower, and 300 for her wedding and reception. a total of 500.00 before HER June wedding.
THAT seems like a lot to me. BUT, her wedding and reception cost she said is about 10,000. YIKES!.
I am thinking when I married it was subscription shower of 4.00 per person.
THANK YOU,
PLEASE respond

1. invest in a good sunblock - I recommend BULLFROG. 2. Eat a full breakfast and lunch - saves on all the snacking and binge eating, 3. Enjoy! (Native Floridian) (NT) -- Gina Foster, 05:03:29 04/05/04 Mon
- If you're visiting 3 of the 4 Disney parks, I would recommend the Magic Kingdom, Epcot and the Animal Kingdom. The Disney-MGM park has only a few rides and a lot of shows, which many kids don't appreciate until they're older. But whatever you do, you will have a great time at Disney! Use FASTPASS as much as you can to avoid waiting in line for the popular rides. Enjoy!! (NT) -- Frequent WDW visitor, 11:36:16 04/07/04 Wed
- Thanks to all! We had a great time! Disney was packed, so Fastpass helped a lot! And, I was a good mom who SLATHERED #45 sunscreen on all the kids, but one of my kids still had a weird "sun allergy" reaction (itchy rash). That's the price we pay for being Irish! No pigment! Other than the doctor's visit, it was a great vacation. (NT) -- OP, 18:21:29 04/30/04 Fri

- Tired of lugging your dancer’s feis gear around – shoe bag, wig bag, stool, etc? Here’s the perfect solution - a lightweight backpack with a detachable seat. (more) -- Three Bag Ladies, 08:33:05 04/06/04 Tue
Not only can your dancer carry her own gear, she will have a seat handy for sitting before and between competitions.
While the backpack is large enough to hold all of your dancer’s feis gear, the seat helps protect your dancer’s expensive dress. She will no longer have to sit on the floor to change her shoes, or drag her feis bag and stool around the stage with her. All of her dancing gear will be handy, as she sits beside the stage waiting her turn. AND you can sit and watch her dance anytime, anywhere. Strong enough to hold most adults.
Available in navy blue, red, yellow, purple, and royal blue.
$22.00 plus $6.50 shipping. For more information or to order email three3bagladies@yahoo.com

- Performances?????? -- IDMOM, 18:56:00 09/30/03 Tue
How does your ID school handle performances as far as feeding the performers? Our school has the dancers come in after school around dinner time practice at the venue for the performance (usually a 2 hour wait before the actual performance)then gives them water and tells the dancers after the performance to change and go home. Is this a common practice with other schools? this will be the second time my dd school will be doing this a a hghly visible venue. One time was just before lunch on a weekend.

- wig suggestions please -- mom, 07:31:44 02/10/04 Tue
I'm looking for suggestions of a wig for a very petite 7 year old (more like the size of an average 5-6 year old). Most of the 3/4 wigs overwhelm my daughter, they're just too much. She currently wears a curly bun and wants something more. She's dancing half of her dances in Novice, the rest in Prizewinner.

when to order a dress? -- mom of ID, 17:28:14 02/14/04 Sat
Hi, I am in a bit a a fix. I need to get 2 solo dress for my novice dancers. My problem is when to get them. If I get them now and they are ready for the spring there are not that many feis I know we will be going to and I am afraid it will not fit in the fall for at least the NEO. Has anyone had solo dresses made a bit big so the girls can grow into them? (they are 12 & 13 years old) I worry they may look funny. Any help with this would be wonderful! Thanks

Soft shoes -- CR, 08:08:56 01/29/04 Thu
My daughter started dancing last year. Her teacher keeps telling her to get on her toes. When she practiced at home, I also noticed that her feet were a bit flat when she danced. She told me she couldn't get on her toes in her shoes, and showed me how she danced on her toes when just wearing socks. (Other than the toe issue, her form is very good - fifth position, high kicks, etc)
Her shoes do have relatively thick, stiff leather. Is there a good brand that allows more flexibility? My daughter's shoes are broken in, so that's not the issue.
(Or, do all beginners have problems staying on their toes in any shoe?)
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

- bent arms -- wolfpups, 02:49:40 01/14/04 Wed
First, if it didn't come out right, I wanted to thank everyone for their responses. I really do appreciate the input.
I also have another question(for those of you who will bear with me.) My son is very new to ID and seems to be picking things up quickly. The problem is that he has a tendency to use his arms and throw his body forward in his skip-2-3's. When I asked his teachers for advice on how to train him out of this, one said stand and hold his body up for him and the other said have him hold a piece of string behind his back.
The second is definately more useful but I was wondering if there is another method or combination of methods anyone has used? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

First Solo Dress -- Diane, 21:01:04 02/06/04 Fri
Hoping to aquire any information......Am currently looking for a first Solo dress - Novice - is there a site that states the standards/requirements for each levels attire? I've been looking at a couple of sites that sell used dresses (we're on a tight budget) some seem very traditional and some have elaborate scenes or swans, castles, etc. and are not traditional...
Thanks in advance!

Irish Dancer on Board -- Lori Fehlinger, 07:48:17 02/05/04 Thu
I recently had an "Irish Dancer on Board" magnet taken from the back of my car while I was parked at work. It was a fairly large round magnet with ghillies and hardshoes in the center, with the wording around the edge. I bought it at the Delaware feis from a vendor that I haven't seen since. I have searched all morning to replace it, but no luck! If anyone is familiar with this product or something similar (magnet, not sticker), can you please let me know where to purchase it? Thanks so much! Lori

Curls that stay - help! -- beauty school reject!, 13:26:20 02/01/04 Sun
My daughter has pin straight hair. I have attempted hot curlers, curling irons, and sponge curlers, but the hair still flops after an hour. My attempt to coat the hair with various gels before using sponge rollers was disastrous (result: straight, greasy hair).
Any suggestions? Please...no debates on wigs vs. natural curls...we don't want to use a wig (just our preference). I just want advice from anyone who has found a product/method that works. Thanks!

Curls That Will Give Your Irish Dancer Something to Dance About! -- Pam, 22:18:55 01/24/04 Sat
The day of a event can be horrible if everyones hair doesn't look exactly the way you want it too.
Electric hot roller, burning yourself or them. Those cute sponge rollers that break the tips off their hair and the back breaking hour it takes you to put them in and then, using so much hairspray that their hair bonds to the rollers. Or the wig that looks like a wig!
It can be CRAZY!
By the time you arrive half of the curls have flopped and those that haven't do, and by the time their ready to compete their hair is a disaster.
You can take the guess work and the worry out of what their hair is going to look like with this wonderful hairpiece.
Let the girls sleep all night... let them take a shower in the morning... pull their hair up in a ponytail and use alittle bit of gel and hair spray to get all of the wispies... put the hair into a bun and use a couple of bobbypins to secure the bun...
Place the hairpiece over the bun and pull the strings.... until it is tight. Tie the strings like you are tieing your shoes. Wrap the strings up into a little circle and secure with another bobby pin. Add your bow and off you go!
They bounce, they shine and you will look DEVINE!
This is the answer to everyones dream when everything has to be perfect. These Curlz come in a variety of colors and can be worn other times also, school, church, weddings, dance, parties and you name it and you can wear it.
THERE IS NO LIMIT AS TO WHEN or how YOU CAN WEAR IT.
I will match the color you request.
If you have a questions, please email me immediately so that you don't miss out. Momofteengirls@aol.com
These look wonderful and make you look like you spent all day long at the beauty salon.
Competitions have started. Order one so that you will have the TOTAL Package!. You won't be disappointed!

- appropriate age to start? -- wolfpups, 21:00:38 01/05/04 Mon
I have a son who just started ID. I also have a daughter who is two. The school my son attends has a tiny tots class starting at the age of three. My question is whether or not that is too young to start ID. It seems that they wouldn't have enough coordination or attention span at that age. What is the best age to start them at?

- As long as I am asking questions--travel, how much do you do? -- new mom, 20:57:23 11/19/03 Wed
Thankfully we have a good while before we will begin to need to travel (if DD stays in/is good enough to even need to travel), but I am wondering what is the 'average' amount of travel that an ID family does with their kids. How many weekends a year? And how far are most people willing to travel? I mean, I know there are the worlds, etc--but I mean on a more basic scale--I am not expecting to ever have the opportunity to take kids to the 'huge' stuff (although who knows I guess)--but I am more interested in what the 'normal' travel schedule is like.
I know that our school will dictate a lot of this--and I have found out that we will be expected to compete in order to stay active in the school...
Thanks again!
new mom
