IRISH DANCER MOMS AND DADS

My three daughters are in their second year of dance, all three have stick straight hair, and don't want to curl it for feisanna. Is there a rule that dancers must curl their hair, or is it just popular to do so? I have no experince and don't know whether they should curl or not, can anyone help me out?

- They may not want to curl it now, but when they're at the feis and see everyone else with the curls...they'll probably ask for them next time. I am very sad to say that the solo dress that I put up for sale at Nationals was stolen. It is a beautiful Cranberry pinkish-red with aqua and silver designs, approximate child's size 12. It was last seen around 4:00 pm on Sunday. Below is the link to a picture of the dress. PLEASE, if you have any information on this dress, please email me. Hotel security is investigating, but if the dress is returned or paid for, no questions will be asked. I'm hoping it is just a dreadful mistake. Thanks for any help anyone can give. McElvogue Trainer Festival of Irish Dancing -- Directions to Feis 12th/13th July 03, 11:43:11 07/07/03 Mon
Sorry but due to a South Tyneside MBC ruling we are unable to erect direct signs to this weekend feis: McElvogue Trainer Festival of Irish Dancing, Brinkburn Comprehensive School, South Shields, Tyne & Wear. As such we are instead placing directions on this and assorted other message boards, please accept our apologies for this but the Council only advised this afternoon that they would not allow any signs in the borough.

From the A1 or A19 follow the signs for South Shields; these will lead you to the A194 Leam Lane and the main route into the town. Follow the A194 or signs for South Tyneside District Hospital and Accident Centre until you come to the Simonside roundabout, easy to spot the 1st roundabout with traffic lights on it. At the Simonside roundabout turn right onto the A1300 John Reid Road, again follow signs for the hospital.

Follow the A1300 John Reid Road past the 1st set of traffic lights, go over the 1st roundabout, at the 2nd roundabout (Big green Lease Direct garage on your left) turn left onto Boldon Lane, go past the garage, ambulance station etc, go across the 1st roundabout (by the pub) at the next roundabout turn right into Harton Lane (another pub!). Follow the road down Ľ of mile, over the roundabout, follow the road to the hospital.

2 options:
Option 1: Take the 1st right after the hospital and turn into McAnany Avenue, the school is on your left, follow the road to the 3rd set of gates on your left, this is a teachers car park, please feel free to park there for the feis.

Option 2: continue down Harton Lane past St. Wilfreds school on your left, on your right there is a turning for Brinkburn CA, turn into the lane leading to the CA, there are 2 car parks, again feel free to use them for the feis. If you come to yet another roundabout and another pub (The Grey Hen) you have passed your turning, go back on yourself and this time the CA entrance is on your left.

Entrance to the feis is via either the main school entrance or via the CA

Again sorry about not being able to put up signs (all printed and laminated) but we have to obey the ruling of the town's council.

- The quick answer is that a lot depends on what level your dd is in, her age, and who is judging. Some judges don't care about hair, especially on beginners and very young dancers. To others -- longtime ID mom, 05:57:20 06/21/03 Sat

My 8 yr old daughter has started her heavies and is struggling - she cant get her trebles to come out atall - and she cant do the clicks. Her TCRG has recommended that she go back a grade unless she can pick them up. She doesnt want this as she thinks her friends will not talk to her. She is thinking of quitting altogether.

Has anyone out there got any tips for her - I'm of no help as I cant dance myself - and I dont know any of the other mom's or dancers. We parents arent permitted in the classes. Any help would be appreciated.

My daughter is 9 and having problems with timing. She rushes some parts of all her dances and is slow in other parts. She is in adv beg and has been winning 2nd's. She has wonderful posture and technique it's just the timing. She is working in private lessons on this but at home I can't tell if her timing is right. She practices to several CD's and different mucic. Any ideas?

- I've got a couple friends who go there. It's a relatively new school and doesn't strike me as being too competitive, which can be good or bad depending on your needs. I mean some people compete, but I don't see many of them at feiseanna. I think it's a really fun school though. I heard the teachers are very nice, which is also a plus. - The venue was wonderful and the competitions were on time. Some people complained that non-Europeans didn't place well... but the English and Irish competitors were incredible... so no complaints from ME on that issue! - My dd is in the U18 age group & her new solo was done w/ an irredescent royal blue duponi silk that turns to purple. Colors used for the applique were silver lame, gold lame, kelly green holographic glitter, fushia holographic glitter, light blue glitterball, fushia/silver square holographic glitter. She wanted a Renassance w/ a modern look. The design was done w/ black threads around ALL the appliques which made it POP!!! I have finally given in and bought my daughter a wig. My only problem - I am frightened that it will fall off at competitions when she is on the stage. Her teacher has said that if any of her pupils wigs fall off during a competition she will ban them from her class. I have tried it on her at home and let her dance in it - but it doesn't seem secure.

Can anyone assist me - I hear there is some sort of a net to wear under a wig to make it easier to put on. I can't work with hair - and so putting it in plaits etc is no good to me. I would get her hair cut - but my dughter doesnt want that either. Please give me some tips on how to put on, attach - and keep it on her head.

- I pull my dd's hair straight back and put a barrette about 2 inches from her hairline - then the rest is put into a loose braid/plait or those looped up pony tails. this is looped (her hair is waist length) and pinned to her head. At this time of year, many schools perform at shows, and the question was raised on another board about bringing your dancers to see these performances. If your dancers are just beginning, it might be fun, but my daughter had a devastating experience last December that nearly caused her to quit dancing. I had purchased tickets for the family to attend a show by a well known performer in a nearby city. When we arrived at the show and read the program, my daughter noticed that the program listed "special appearance by the (her school) Irish Dancers". She assumed that the performers would be the senior 16+ Open Championship Dancers, as no one in her classes had mentioned being invited to perform. My daughter was in Prizewinner, and had qualified for Prelims. I will never forget her look of shock and pain as she saw dancers from her class take the stage. As she watched them perform their routine, tears streamed down her cheeks as she realized that EVERY OTHER dancer at her age and level had been invited to perform at this show. She was the ONLY CHILD NOT INVITED. We somehow managed to get through the rest of the show, but I felt terrible for having taken her to the show. She was so upset about being excluded that she did not want to return to class and face her classmates who all knew the teacher had left her out of the planning, practice, and performing. She said she felt like an outsider and had been betrayed by girls she had thought were her friends. After my daughter feigned illness and refused to attend class for two weeks, I made an appointment to speak with the teacher while my daughter was in school. I began the conversation by stating how surprised my husband, daughter and I were to see dancers from DDDDD school at the SSSSS concert last month. Her face dropped, and she immediately realized what had happened. She began to explain that she had never expected my daughter to attend the show and would never have intentionally done anything to hurt one of her dancers. She tried to explain that it wasn't done because she didn't think my daughter was "good enough", but that my daughter was not the right size to fit with the group.(She is 2" taller than the tallest dancer chosen.) She reiterated that my daughter was not supposed to find out that her classmates were doing a show that she wasn't, that they had been told to keep it a secret. The teacher explained that she would never hurt a student, and promised to plan a show for St. Patrick's Day that would include her and even give her a solo in the show. I left the meeting, explaining that I would discuss the situation with my daughter and she would decide what she wanted to do.
My daughter felt she could not face the humiliation of returning to class, and that she could not trust the teachers promises and asked to change schools. She is currently on suspension from competition, but enjoying performances with her new school.

  - Oh I can my dear! when you've been involved in ID as long as I have (40 years) you get to see it ALL! i've seen teachers absolutely diss kids in their classes on a whim - some of them have absolutely no clues about working relationships and no class either! and it's not the TCRG who is stupid that is the problem here, but the ones who are being just plain nasty who are the bigger problems for us all.... - While I am definitely sorry to hear of the experience your daught had (that is awful and I would never condone or promote such actions) I do want to pose another possability before everyone assumes that all teachers have bad or selfish intentions. - I find this near impossible to believe. A big show charging admission to the public would require at least one or two practices prior to the day, wouldn't it? That in mind, I'm sure that the teacher went with people who are dedicated and make all the classes without many absences. I want to be an irish dance teacher one day (T.C.R.G.) and I know alot of really great teachers. They've given me alot of good advice on how to run a school, but I would like to know what parents like to see in a school or in a teacher. How much are you willing to pay? How many classes a week do you think your children should take. How much control should a teacher have over your look( costumes, wigs)? Do you think a teacher has the right to tell what brand of shoes a dancer should wear? What do your children like about their teacher. THANKS!

- I think it's good for a teacher to advise what type of shoe might be appropriate to their foot and maybe recommend a brand if asked, but I personally don't think they should demand a parent buy a certain brand. I would LOVE and appreciate some advice from the veteran IS mom's!! My daughter started dancing this year at age 5(Sept. 02)( she will be 6 this summer) with a very good teacher in the northeast! My daughter lives eats and breaths IS, she is always stepping and practing. Whether she is in the supermarket, getting dressed, shower (singing out the steps) I have even seen her feet under the covers before going to bed at night . (actually she is behind me right now dancing) I have had other parents and the teacher tell me how good she is for a 1st year student. I called the teacher at home about dancing on a team for the school or doing it one other time during the week, and trying to express to her how much she loves it and wants to do it. The teacher keeps telling me the first year should me fun and she will not take her. I FEEL LIKE YELLING AT HER "IT IS FUN FOR HER THAT IS WHY SHE DOES IT ALL THE TIME!" I have talked to other parents who children do not want to practice or go to class. My daughter is starting to get bored working on the same dances over and over while the other students who started with her are still learning it.
I feel if this is something that she loves and wants to do that the teacher should regonize that and help her progress. It is a big school with many locations. Would I be better with a smaller school? The teacher takes 2 months off in the summer. My daughter does not want to stop over the summer, can I get her private lessons without offending the teacher? What is the norm or the rule? Should I just stick it out on more year and see what happens?? She is a very nice lady who I think has so many students that she can't focus on mine right now. I also see a preference for the students who mothers have IS. The 2nd and 3rd generation thing(those 5 yrs students have moved up) I can't help but feel my daughter is being over looked. It would be so easy to make a point with this that would quietly tell the judges that we care.
Simply have a time on stage that we all agree to when the kids make a point of lifting their arms.If we want to be very laidback about it, the kids could just lift both arms to check their hair. If we want it a quiet but firm statement, then the kids just politely make a point of lifting their arms forward while the judge is looking. It will be obvious what they are doing, and why.
I'd recommend starting this on a chosen date...for instance, St. Patrick's Day, 2003.
We could really start something that would make a difference. We have a voice...let's effect change!

- A 5 y/o from our school broke her arm in a bad playground fall. She had to have surgery, and it was a big ordeal. Our teacher ordered a teddy bear for her with its arm in a sling and was very supportive of the little girl. When she came back, she was a little pensive (didn't want to fall on her arm again) and our teacher was so understanding. When I had surgery my teacher called me the next day. What is everyone's feeling out there about having the same adjudcator judge all your child's compeitions? It makes for a faster time with the dances but if they don't for whatever reason like your child or they tend to which is only human favor a particular child , it makes it hard on the other dancers. My daughter likes the one stage one adjudcator ,but I feel that althought she does well it isn't fair to those who don't. sorry for the spelling errors. Any ideas out there?

- I prefer staying on one stage and having the judges rotated after each dance (i.e. one judge for all the reels, rotate, new judge for jigs, etc.)... occasionally we get a judge for two dances, but that's not too bad. Does anyone have any tips for getting feis photos to turn out? After 3 attempts in different locations I am ready to give it up. I know we are not supposed to use a flash, but there never seems to be enough light to go without it. Photos turn out with a yellowish haze. Turning off the flash also causes a longer shutter speed on my camera and then any movement is a blur. Any suggestions welcome!

How does your school choose which dancers are selected for the important shows your school does ? All other dancers my DD's age and level (prelim) were included in a big show last month.The show was public performance with a well known group, and I had bought tickets for the family before I knew dancers from her school were to perform.It had been kept secret who had been asked to participate. DD saw all her classmates on stage and began to cry. She is reluctant to discuss this with her teachers, as they may accuse her of "complaining". How have other families dealt with similar occurrances ?

My daughter was the one with the older teacher who has political catfights with the other TCRGs in the area. She finally made the move, after much consideration of other schools. She misses her old friends, but knows that she'll see them at feisanna. She's dancing all over the place, again, after being bored by simple steps for too long. It's a shame that she missed out in learning some basic skills (older teacher didn't teach crossover and turn-out), but she's working at it.
Many of you gave us excellent advice, and I thank you for it! It's nice to have you there.

- My dd switched last year & I only wish we had done it sooner. She was dancing in prelim & was blown away by dancers from other schools. We had been kept away from many regional events by the former teacher. When we switched schools we found out that she didn't even know the basics very well. I only wish that we had switched sooner. We have some difficult parents in our school. Teacher seems to let them walk all over her- i think mainly because it is easier th just let them do it than cause a war. dont get me wrong, she does defend herself and upholds rules, etc- but these parents are rotten. always causing fights etc. i almost think they need to leave. i see her point for downplaying the issues, but at the same time think another course of action needs to be taken. what do you all think?

some of you may recall messages from me about my dilemma i.e. being a teaching assistant to a TCRG who was difficult - well, I've moved on and am now taking a break. the TCRG is badmouthing me to all and sundry in the dancing world (which just goes to show how badly behaved SOME TCRGs can be) but I'm rising above it and enjoying my free time. My daughter has signed up to participate in her school's show team for the past three years, but has never been chosen for this honor. Each year the teachers tell her that she has to meet some goal, such as get all dances into PW, in order to be included, and each year she accomplishes what they ask only to find the bar has now been set higher. When she spoke privately with one of the teachers about her concern she was publicly chastised for having a "bad attitude and feeling she was superior". About a year ago, the teachers assured her that she would be the next dancer to be included on the show team. At a school event over the weekend, she found out that a group of dancers her age and younger had been placed on the team ahead of her despite their promise that she would be next. These girls are at novice to new PW level, while my daughter has multiple seconds in all PW dances and first in her strongest dance. She now feels the teachers lied by not keeping their promise to her. Does anyone have suggestions on how to deal with this issue ? Talking with the teachers seems ill-advised given the public humiliation that occurred last time this topic was discussed with the teachers. Changing schools would be nearly impossible due to travel distance. Should she simply give up on her dream of joining the show team, since there must be some reason, known to the teachers alone, that she is continuously passed over. I don't want to believe prejudice is the reason, but it may be. This would be a sad lesson for a child.

The teacher lined her up with the other dancers and then removed her from the line. She was heartbroken at the time, but it does not bother her now because she does solos at the Oireachtas.         At my daughters school, the teams are put together based on the way the girls look together. Anyone who is shorter, taller, too skinny, or too stocky is not asked to be on the teams. We, the undersigned, request that the Irish Dance Teacher Association of North America (IDTANA) consider confining the North American Irish Dance Championships (NAIDC) to dancers who reside in North America ONLY.
We feel that a true National championship should only include dancers from that nation, to determine a true national champion.
We feel that with the influx of Irish and British dancers attending this event, our own North American dancers are denied the chance to place at their own Nation's championship.
We feel that the vast numbers of dancers involved make adequate planning and organisation of the event near impossible and too much hard work for the volunteers.
We feel that closing the NAIDC will create more of a sense of unity between North American dancers, and that our dancers will improve and flourish in international competition (The World Championships) as a result of the closure.

Any of you ID moms (or dads) scrapbookers? If so, where do you find your ID/irish stickers, die-cuts, etc? I've found one series of stickers with Irish dancers on them, and they're cute, but that's all I've seen, and I don't want an entire book full of them. If you even have the company name on a pack of stickers or die-cuts that you could share, that'd be awesome, as my local scrapbook store can order them. I did find several rubber stamps that have livened up the pages, but more stickers are needed!

My daughter is 9 and in her 3rd year of dance. She does very well and is competing adv beg/novice. The teachers love her- she learns quickly most of the time. The problems is practice at home. We haven't been to strict with practice at home as she hasn't needed it. Now the steps are getting harder and are more of a challange for her. She still does fine in class- would not even think of fussing. When we practice at home ( teacher recommends 30-45 min a day) she does fine on the easire stuff but becomes very frustrated when she can't get something fast. She ends up crying and with an attitude. She won't take instruction from me. I am tired of doing battle. She takes 2 classes a week and she says she loves it. She also loves competition. I have threatened to pull her out and put her in less advanced class as practice is required and she cries. She always has an excuse when practicing- to hot, too cold, feet hurt, stomach hurts ect. I realize she is young and wondering if I am pushing her too hard at home. The teacher doesn't have any suggestions. She is not overwelmed with other activities ID is her only one. Any ideas?

- Boy does that sound familiar... My dd was doing the same way back when & I did a practice calendar that "She" was in charge of putting the stars on the completed practice. I wouldn't look at the calendar until the end of the month & if she had 3 stars w/ 30 min practice on each one (3 per wk) then she got treated to a "Movie" rental of her choice. - Don't force her. She will start to dislike it. While practice is necessary, quality of practice is more important. You will have many other things to battle with your daughter. - I never made my daughter practice. I didn't want to fight to make her do it because this was something she was supposed to be doing for fun. I agree with the above poster, if you have to make her do it, she may start to dislike it and give it up altogether. A little time spent practicing and enjoying it is far more valuable that a lot of time spent practicing under duress.
