I understand where you coming from. From what I read the Mastiff breed is a slow maturing breed. All breeds have there time table. Border Collies at 8 months make a GSD of the same age look retarded. That blank look you describe can be discouraging. I have seen it and it is not pretty. Still train hard and you might consider changing your training routine as a young Mastiff bores easily and pattern training is not the way to go in this breed. Train hard and good luck. Keep me informed as I am sure I will travel much the same path soon.
