OOOh, Apples to Oranges. Herding dogs to molossers, mastiffs at that. Welcome to a different world. And, you can't compare the mastiffs to APBTs, or the ABs. The mastiffs were bred to lay back until something happens or until they are asked/told to join in.

Not big on long ball sessions - very few are. And yes -"Why the heck did you throw it again?" is a common mastiff type response. Want more of and a longer response? Buy a big ball from Kmart - you know, they really big ones. Yes, he will punch a hole in it soon enough . But, you will see more of the "tackle" response. Most likely, you will end up going to get the ball from them to roll or bounce again, but many mastiffs LOVE the full body contact.
Knock it over and hold it.

I watch these GSDs and Mals that the PDs and Law Enforcement have. I am NOT a herding dog person. Nothing drives more up the wall more than to try and get info from a cop while his dog is acting the fool in the back of the squad car. "I CAN BARK REALLY REALLY LOUD AND I HAVE REALLY BIG TEETH - SEE!" I just tell my dog that "They can't help it, they're herding dogs." She just sighs, turns her back on the other dog, and sits down (between me and the other person). I have seen very few of their dogs aloowed out of the squad car at a scene or function. However, Ms. Social Butterfly is in the thick of things when the situation allows - and she still scares the pants off law enforcement.

OK - she's a BM, not a BB - but closer in attitude than a GSD. And BTW - she can catch a few things - rats, snakes (I hate that one), cats....she's working on rabbits, but it is hard to change direction when you have a sack of cement attached to you chest.

Have you noticed a difference in their "play rules" when the two play together? I'll bet he will wait until she comes back around again, and then try to tackle her - rather than waste energy chasing her around the yard or pen.

Keep us up to date on how things go. I am not trying to make any fun or insult, but it just tickles me to death when herding dog people come across a matiff.
