Greetings all,
When the Boerboel first arrived in America, there were some of us that were eager to participate in the system set up for the preservation of this breed. After we got our hands on a few more Boerboels we saw that the need for breed improvement was even greater than we first knew. We went to see how this system would work, how it could benefit the breed, how we could use this tool. We were disappointed. The present appraisal system, conducted properly, by trained dog-experts, in the best of situations, will reward good specimens for sure...but it lacks a mechanism for testing and appraising the most important aspect of a working breed; the temperament and physical ability of the dog. The NABC was set up to draw a distinct line between dogs that can...and dogs that can't. It can be used in conjunction with or without the appraisal process to further evaluate your dog. The NABC does not make breeding reccomendations, rather it sets up a minimum standard to test against. Pass or fail, you the breeder then decide if you want to breed. We invited the HBSA to come to our event, see how we tested dogs, find out if we have mutual concerns and ideas for real improvement...we participated in their appraisal, they listened to us about our ideas. Progress can be made if concerned, experienced people work together, share ideas, and have shared common goals.

DKH
