The appraisal can be a very good assessment tool. Is the present assessment 'method' the most informative method? At the appraiser's course that Carel and Jan presided over this question was discussed at length. One of the ways discussed to modify the scoring method was to forego the idea of averaging. A score sheet consist of sections that comprise the various areas of a dog, i.e., the head, the forequarters, the hindquarters, etc. Each section gets a score and after all sections have been scored, an average is determined. One of the most obvious problems with an 'average' score is, a dog can score really high any many areas and really low in one area, resulting in a failry good average, hiding the fact that the dog may have been nearly disquaslified in one area. One of the thoughts that was tossed around when discussing the 'average' was to eliminate the 'average'. An appraised dog would not get a single score but would have a score for each section of the score sheet. It would then be easily identifiable as to a dogs strong area(s) as well as there weak area(s). Then as a breeding 'tool', (one tool of many), you can look at your dog's weak area and look for a dog that scores high in the area where your was not as strong.

I'll finish by saying you will never eliminate competition, (nor should you). No matter what the scoring system is or whether you have a score at all, there will be competition, (as there should be). It would seem that some have the idea that competition is bad, that making money is bad ------- I will say out loud, I'm not one of those people. Have a great day, Jerry.
