thanks for responding, jb.
only two general comments:
------------------------------------------------------------
i AM intriqued with the research angela has found in regard to boosting the immune system for this particular problem but, the general concept itself isn't (as i'm sure you know) all that new. in human and animal, a healthy immune system lessens a host of ills. it HELPS (at times) in lessening the symptoms of certain diseases (sometimes removing them altogether) but, unless the problem is caused by poor diet or the after-effects of some sort of illness, i don't think it actually 'cures' it.
in the case of demodex, the mother may APPEAR healthy but the stresses of pregnancy will still affect her immune system and the immunities she passes on to the litter.
i would think there would need to be many test breedings (resulting in, obviously, NO puppies contracting it) over the life of many dogs that were affected and now appear healthy, before it could be determined that such a course of action was indeed a cure.
while i advocate preventive measures that include both the genetic and contagion theories, i do so because it is the safest route until an exact answer can be found. to the best of my knowledge (and i hope to be corrected if i am mistaken) a disease of any sort cannot be BOTH.
------------------------------------------------------------
to a certain extent (and under normal circumstances), it is my belief that no breeder (or anyone else for that matter)has the 'right' to tell me (the buyer) what i may or may not do with MY dog.
BUT....because you have been in the business so long and have the reputation you do, you must be aware that there are those who seek you out for advise and see you as a mentor of sorts. what you do and what you say, has a great effect on any matter pertaining to this breed.
this isn't your 'choice' of course. each person must take responsibility for their own actions. still...you ARE a rolemodel and as such carry a heavy responsibility to the breed you've chosen to propagate. i mean no disrespect to yourself or anyone else---you've said that you don't know the answer to the question on the table at present and are using your years of experience to guide you.
i simply feel that demodex would not fall under the 'normal circumstances' catagory and, until a definite answer is known, an exception to the basic rule of 'owners rights' might be made.
again---thank you for responding and i look forward to any further developments those researching the situation might post.
