Doooogie, You need to read my post again. I said the permanent registration process has hurt the "promotion of the breed", not the breed itself. I am sure there will be some people who will breed inferior females to good males or inferior males to good females. I am sure that this is probably already happening. Just because a dog will tree a coon doesn't mean it is a coon dog! Several people have had pups that would tree on a coon at 5 months old, you surely wouldn't call that dog a coon dog. Most of the fellas that have been around these leopard dogs for several years know what they are doing as far as breeding dogs. Pick a breeder you want and get your pup there. Registration papers do not make the dogs any better. The best dog I have ever hunted with was a grade english/bluetick cross. He was absolutely the best!!!!
I have a few calls every year from people wanting to know about the permanent registration process. Most do not want to travel possibly 200 plus miles to hunt with someone to get their dogs registered. Possibly the dog may not even tree a coon that night and they may have to make that trip again. That would definitely make me want to own something other than a leopard. I started hunting leopards in 1973, and I still hunt them. The number of people hunting leopards in 1973 was about the same as it is today. That shows that we need to do something more to promote the breed. Maybe UKC hunts and shows will draw more people to hunt leopards thus promoting the breed. Years ago grade hounds hunted against the "few registered" hounds in the coon club hunts. Now, registered hunts are all we have. No where is there a grade hunt. Point is: the hunts have sure promoted the registered dogs. We have to do something, I don't know if ukc is the answer or not, but we need to do something to promote these dogs. Please Doooogie, post your ideas on promoting the dogs, people will listen. Dan N
