- IKEA -- Liz, 12/10/11 10:15am
When my oldest son and his wife told me they wanted an Ikea gift certificate for Christmas my heart sank. Don't get me wrong, I think they have some great furniture for young couples and kids. I also like their china and linens. The only unfortunate thing is that you have to go to the store to get them. That is also true of picking up a gift certificate. Ikea is sometimes just a little too "precious" for me. Buy our re-usable store bags because they are "green" but don't even think about asking what holds the woodchips together on our particle board furniture. So I went to the ONE check out lane that was open and was third in line. A half hour later, I was still third in line. A woman had brought a ton of linens to check out that did not have bar codes on them. There had to be a phone call about each piece and sometimes the new bar code given over the phone was not correct. FINALLY she got all her stuff through and left. The next person had a coupon or gift certificate that the register would not accept. More calls on the phone, a supervisor came to try to punch in the numbers and by this time the line is now snaking to the back of the store. I had made a Christmas resolution that I would never criticize store clerks because they are only doing their jobs and this is a trying time of year. A man in his thirties had not made that same resolution. He left his merchandise in line and came forward. Why on earth in a store the size of a city block couldn't they have one more check out lane open? The gentleman behind me had been there on Friday and waited an hour and a half to check out. The woman behind him put her items on a display counter and left. It finally was my turn. The clerk went to load the amount of the gift certificate I was buying on the card and couldn't do it. Another call to the supervisor and much punching of numbers on the register and FINALLY I had my card. Now this is Ikea, an international conflomerate. Joe's corner grocery store knows that when the check out line gets lengthy you call up someone to help with check out. Target has someone who does nothing else but make sure there are enough clerks and check out lines open. How can this keep happening there? Even the self check out was backed up. Fortunately I may not have to go in there again for a very long time. Merry Christmas!

- THANKSGIVING -- Liz, 11/22/11 8:34am
Well, the tradition has been passed on. For the first time I will not be hosting Thanksgiving. We will be going to our son and daughter in law's home for the big event. He is deep frying the turkey. He claims it will be delicious. I can't wait to see how it works. I am bringing plenty of food as well so I still feel like I'm participating at least a little bit. The grandchildren want to play charades. I love chardes, too, but my husband is possibly the worst charades player ever. That might be the highlight of the whole afternoon. I hope everyone has a wonderful day with good food and good company. I guess I am getting to an age that despite whatever hardships come my way, I am still so grateful to be alive, to have family, to have work I like and a little better perspective of what is really important in life and what is not.

- FROSTY STARS -- lIZ, 11/30/11 9:34am
Last night I finished putting up all of my Christmas decorations. Every year I tell myself I will scale down and do a little less. Then my granddaughter arrives and asks me to take her around and show her everything. We light things, wind up things, count things and at the end she say: thankyou grandma for showing me your beautiful things. That makes scaling back an impossibility! When I was done it was about 11pm. Surprisingly, we have no snow as of yet. I put on my big down coat and went out on the deck and was stunned by how beautiful the stars were. They were brilliantly clear. I could see the Pleides(seven sisters) and count each star. How wonderful it is to see Orion on the rise with Sirius(my favorite star) trailing alongside. It was absolutely still. While I was watching the sky, a beautiful meteor went slowly across the horizon shimmering green and white. Winter is here.

Now I'm sure you've all heard the Penn State news but I can tell you living in State College is extremely surreal right now. - A FREE WOMAN ONCE AGAIN -- Liz, 10/30/11 11:17am
After two weeks of trying to get on a jury unsuccessfully I am now done with my public service. What an incredible experience. We all know the trials of Casey Anthony and the doctor who treated Michael Jackson. But on any given day in our county there are dozens of people making their way through the court systems, having smaller trials, and far less dramatic sentencing. I must say that all the judges who did the first part of the "voir dire" were bending over backwards to eliminate anyone from the jury who might have a bias of some sort. The questioning of potential jurors was meticulous. Unfortunately I never made the cut. I don't think being on the City Council and viewed as a "friend" of the police helped! By the way, where has everyone gone in the meantime? Where is Amy? Where is Poule?

Don't get me wrong, I love fall. However, June was cold and rainy, July was hot as ****, and August has arrived with a few short weeks of really nice weather. Last night I was driving home from a meeting at 9pm and it was(I hate to say it) DARK! The days are closing in. The mornings are not as bright. The sumac here is turning and some of the maples are already red. I actually had to wear a(again I hate to say it) a sweater yesterday. However it will be 90 tomorrow in this state of ever changing weather. I think I am just very gunshy about winter. Last winter was so terrible that the idea of having to endure another one like that terrifies me. I am hoping for a long, langorous temperate fall.

I think the White House is playing a very good game - if a little dangerous. They've come out today with what has been interpreted by some as suggesting cuts to Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid may be necessary in compromise with House Republicans in order to do the proper thing, close tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthiest 1%.
The game? Getting enough people riled up and upset to make it clear to Republicans that the nation is against the idea of cutting Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid. Just to give you a picture - eliminating the loophole that allows twenty five (really, 25) Hedge fund traders declaring their income as capital gains (rather than taxable as income) would raise revenues for the Federal Government by $4 BILLION a year. Imagine what we could do if we just stopped subsidizing oil companies....
Social Security is not a significant contributor to our Federal debt. Now, two wars in the space of ten years....
I'll stop now - don't want to give Amy a headache. ;)

- EXCITING EVENING -- Liz, 08/13/11 10:51pm
Last night about 2am, I awoke to the sky filled with lightning. I went to the window to see what direction the storm was coming from and as I stood there I heard a car come racing up the street, saw it turn the corner and hit the car directly across the street from our house. It sped away further down the cul-de-sac where I heard it hit another car. As I threw on a coat, grabbed the phone and headed outside dialing 911, the car was struggling to find its way out of the cul-de-sac and hit ANOTHER car. I was desperate to make sure that if the car left before the police came that I had its license number. Not wanting to get near it because of the eratic driver, I hid behind a tree ready to memorize the plate when it went by. Fortunately as it came down the street three squads arrived and pinned the car in. The driver turned out to be a 19 year old woman who blew over a .20 on a breathalyzer!! She had no clue where she was and couldn't stand up. I'm so glad the police got there when they did. She could have killed someone. Unfortunately these people never kill themselves only innocent members of the public who happen to be in close proximity to them through no fault of their own. That's underage DUI, three hit and runs and a dollar amount on the total car damage that will make it another whole level of felony crime. Her car looked like it had been through the demolition derby. I'm surprised it was drivable. God bless the police who got there quickly, handcuffed her and took her away.

- BEING PHILOSOPHICAL -- Liz, 07/25/11 10:14pm
So I was thinking today. That is always a very dangerous thing! Four years ago I was diagnosed as a Type II diabetic. I went to work and lost 40 pounds and totally changed the way I eat. All I do is count carbs. I exercise every day and watch every thing that enters my mouth. Today I was at the doctor and he told me that I am no longer a diabetic. My blood sugars have been so low for four years that they are probably lower than his. I am now considered someone who is only mildly glucose intolerant. I don't intend to change one thing about how I eat. I love being thin and fit. I love buying clothes and having them actually fit. Believe me, though, this has been quite a journey. I had "friends" who told me I looked too thin and like I was dying of cancer(I weigh 127 pounds and am 5'3". I walk every day and play tennis at least three times a week. Even my triathalon son told me I have great muscular calves! I told my doctor that they day he tells me I am dying, I am walking down the street to the Downtowner Restaurant and ordering the Belgian waffle with a pound of butter and a whole container of syrup. He got a big charge out of that. What would be your most favorite meal if there was absolutely no consideration of nutrition or health and wellness? I would also love a piece of apple pie with crumbly crust and a big bowl of chocolate pudding. Also a whole box of carmel rolls and donuts. Even though I could probably have something sweet now and then I have no desire to sabotage where I have gotten. By the way I would also love a custard turtle sundae. Lots of fudge, carmel and nuts!

Daisy Dukes and tube tops with your hickies showing NOT okay. Guys running in what looks like speedo underwear or shorts that are way to short NOT okay either. Wearing the Nike workout shirt with the huge armholes and a bra that is so dirty it is gray is not okay either. Neither is wearing a bikini into the library. People, is the sun frying your brains? Are you unconscious when you pull stuff out of your closet? Don't inflict that on the rest of us. I have to admit I couldn't take my eyes off the guy in the speedo/underwear or whatever that was.

Take Eddie Izzard and the Euro....
I would like to hear his considered opinion now, on how to extricate failing countries from the EU, and on what it would mean to the rest of us if Greece/Portugal/Ireland defaulted on loans.
Eddie obviously had such a well informed view of Europe, as why else would anyone talk to media on financial policy, so maybe he should step in and give us his opinion now?

- CAYLEE'S LAW -- Liz, 07/ 9/11 9:34am
The outrage over Casey Anthony and the verdict continues. Florida, along with a growing number of other states, is looking at making it a felony to fail to report your child missing withing 48 hours of their disappearance. It also would be a felony to not report a child'd death or the location of the body withing 48 hours of their death. There has been a petition circulating online that has more than 700,000 signatures. Hence, the things Casey did to hide Caylee's body and fail to report her missing so all the evidence could disappear would now become chargable offenses. There would be no reward now for getting away with murder. This was an AP news item with a byline by Brent Kallestad so I think it is legitimate.

- Women go free amazingly often in criminal cases like this... Still, I'm astounded. Perhaps they shouldn't have made it a death penalty case, because juries often hesitate to convict in such cases - even though there is then an automatic 13-year appeals process, & the conviction is frequently overturned within 5 years or so... (NT) -- Gaby, 07/ 5/11 8:54pm
- They had any number of things they could have convicted her of short of first degree murder. And during the penalty phase, they didn't have to give her the death penalty. My only hope is that she will become a complete pariah and have to pay in other ways for what she did. (NT) -- Liz, 07/ 5/11 11:37pm
- My question is - they convicted her of lying to the police - well what the hell did they think she was lying ABOUT - the weather? (NT) -- Amy, 07/ 6/11 8:34am
- Yeah, as soon as her book is published, and her movie comes out. (NT) -- Amy, 07/ 6/11 1:29pm
- The Prosecution's duty in this case was to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Ms. Anthony actually committed the murder. They did not succeed in providing any proof of that. They certainly laid out a case - but it was, when you came down to it, conjecture - there was no PROOF that she committed the crime. Having said that, I have no doubt that Ms. Anthony was at least complicit, if not the actual murderer - yet there was no EVIDENCE that she actually did. Thus the jurors were actually proper in their 'failure' to arrive at a murder conviction. Now...I'm prepared for the onslaught. Please keep in mind that I believe that she is guilty as sin - but without EVIDENCE, you can only draw a conclusion from behavior - and while her behavior is certainly damning, it isn't enough for conviction of the crime of murder. (NT) -- gumtree, 07/ 6/11 9:38pm

- We've all learned an important lesson. All you have to do is bag up the dead body and put it in a swamp so that all is left is the skeleton. Then you pretend like nothing has happened and VOILA, you have gotten away with murder. (NT) -- Liz, 07/ 7/11 10:54pm

speaking of bad films -- poule, 07/ 4/11 5:47am
I endured *La Vie en Rose* on saturday. It was awful for a number of reasons, not least the editing that chooped anc changed so much without letting the story explain what was going on or who was who, and the snippets given really didnt drive the story on, many being repetative. As for repetative, I do not want to watch drunk girls shouting for 3 hours. The film was billed as marvellous and moving but it was staggeringly boring and I had no sympathy or empathy whatsoever for Edith Piaf, whose singing/songs i generally like; it was like a hatchet job, but then maybe edith didnt have a good side? Or good front teeth?
If this was a french attempt at a Hollywood blockbuster,I wish they wouldnt bother. It lacked nuance.
Oh yeah, and what's with making minor characters into major ones then dumping them w/o any explanation, or introducing the dead child in the last minute or two?
Do not be misled by the advertising on the cover of this dvd. It isnt a good biopic, it isnt a good drama, it isnt a good french film, it isnt even a good musical/film about music. If you like watching drunk girls scream, then this is the film for you

Those of you that have been here a while know that I've been caring for my Mother. She was diagnosed with mini stroke dementia back in 1996. Well it appears the end is near. She is no longer able to swallow safely anymore. She has aspiration pneumonia and it's highly doubtful she'll ever be able "eat" normally again. We've been advised that it's probably best to let her go. Of course we didn't want to hear that, but as things have transpired we now know she's on her way out.
It's tearing me up inside. I've been caring for her since the beginning of her illness and while I'm so very glad she's at home surrounded by her family, it's gonna be tremendously hard to watch her die. We have Hospice help and it's comforting to know we aren't alone and Mom will be comfortable in her last days. I know we are doing the right thing but I keep hearing a line from Steel Magnolias that goes something like, I know that in my head, I just someone would explain it to my heart.
I know I'm not here much anymore, but would be much obliged if you'd keep us in your thoughts. It's going to be a VERY bumpy ride.

- ROYAL WEDDING -- Liz, 05/ 1/11 10:44pm
I did NOT get up at 2am, but I did watch the instant replay on TLC on Friday morning. These are my observations as the Beehive's Fashion and Social maven. I loved her dress. It was ala Grace Kelly and Princess Margaret. Elegant and classic. PLEASE make it the end of all the strapless similar looking current bridal gowns where everyone looks like they are wearing a tight fitting mailing envelope. The tiara had sentiment and was the right size: small. The matching earrings her mother gave her were perfect. I liked everything in white: bridesmaids and flower girls. Pippa looked great and the dress was simple and lovely. The Queen in yellow was very nice, and I think I saw Prince Phillip actually smiling. However, is it just me, or did Prince Charles and Camilla look positively elderly? He was born the same month I was, and I think he looks old enough to be my father. Camilla's dress was nice, but ill fitting. That's the one thing I learned from Stacy and Clinton: no matter your size, things should be tailored to FIT! Princess Beatrice's hat has its own website. It's true it was a curiosity, but I think it was just plain ugly. She is a darling girl with beautiful big eyes and red hair. What milliner did that to her. Well, we did meet the milliner with Clinton, but come on!!!! Maybe the wedding was much ado about nothing, but I thought the trees in the church were beautfiul, the music was beautiful, and they do seem to be truly in love. Let's get out the Bolangers and just say: here's to love!!
