- A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES -- Liz, 01/30/10 12:29am
So, I am venting here. Long day taking care of two of my grandchildren who are sick with pneumonia. Had to babysit because the third granchild is at the pulmonologist for an extensive evaluation of his pneumonia, allergies, asthama, and hoarseness. While I am gone, my husband makes plans for the evening. It was supposed to be a quiet dinner with another couple, but by the time I got home and cleaned up(had to wash the peanut butter out of my hair) there were six of us having dinner and now doing a movie. I know I'm being crabby, but one of the women is a "starer." She never talks, she just stares. I find her so offputting, I was dreading the whole evening and I wasn't disappointed. Then we went to the Mel Gibson movie: The Edge of Darkness. Incredibly violent. That's all I can say. One intriguing thing, though, were the previews. For you Nicholas Cage fans, he has a knight in armour movie coming out where he has to take a witch to an abby and destroy her while she is using all the dark arts to defeat him. I don't know, I would have to wait and see the review on that one. The other preview was for The Werewolf with Beniccio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. Again, it's intriguing and looks beautifully filmed, but I will have to wait for the review. Anyway, I have had some almonds covered with Dove dark chocolate. Feeling moderately better.

Thanks for the review; the ad looked interesting for Mel. Not sure about the violence though- why is that acceptable in films but genitalia isn't? bring back Merchant Ivory films, and Anthony Minghella....alas... (NT) -- Poule (the almonds sound good. - Dark chocolate with almonds will cure anything! I was looking forward to The Wizard with Nicholas Cage but after I saw the preview - I'm with you, waiting for the reviews. Also the same for The Wolfman - I am a big fan of the original and I just KNOW they're going to f*** it up. Look what Coppola did to Dracula... (NT) -- Amy, 01/31/10 10:37am

apparently if you ask " so tell me...when did YOU loose your virginity?".....it breaks ice and seperates sheep from goats and finds needles in haystacks, and makes people choke on their drinks. apparently. (NT) -- Poule, 01/31/10 1:50pm
- This is a hard thing to explain unless you're from St. Paul, but it is a VERY insular city. Everyone went to the same grade school, high school, and college and is now living back on the same block they grew up on if not in their parent's home. The typical question is: what parish are you in? Some of it is charming and some of it is rediculous. I come from an old family in St. Paul, so you would think I would have it made, but I get so tired of having people ask me what branch of the family I am from, so they can place me, that I could scream. We moved out of St. Paul for this reason 20 years ago. I couldn't stand it anymore. The other two couples we were with were dyed in the wool, still vacationing together, still partying together since kindergarten, type people. It's a subtle thing, but it drives me nuts. (NT) -- Liz, 01/31/10 9:46pm
- I saw it. -- gumtree, 01/24/10 9:33pm
Avatar is a must-see. 3-D glasses become unnoticeable after a few minutes; you're too busy waving away insects that aren't there, and brushing off sand, mud and leaves...
I will say that if this technique continues, there will no longer be any need for movie actors. Just create them in your computer.

This news struck me so hard I posted without even finishing my thoughts.... Dorene was always so kind - at the very first Eddie show I went to, at the Westbeth - I posted on the board that I was going - she responded that she would be there too - she didn't know me at all - after the show, outside, I heard her asking people for Roxy - I went up to her and it was as if we'd known each other forever. She even ran after Eddie the next night and had him sign one of the posters and she mailed it to me - I mean - who does that with a total stranger? DORENE!!! We had so much fun chatting and goofing around. I lost track of her a few years ago...*crying*...but now I will talk to her better place and I know she will hear me... (NT) -- Roxy, 01/26/10 11:50pm

- Hi Roxy, Liz - yes I know what you're saying about Dorene, she was a bit crazy for sure, but she's one of the most generous people I've ever met....she was always doing things for others......I really can't believe she's gone.....way too young.....just makes me so sad....but my trip to see Eddie will be for Dor too.....and I'm going to meet up with Pattyspoot and gran81 so it will be a grand time indeed.. Right now, they fill with tears behind the crinkle, because her brightness will always be here. Please say Hi to Gran81 as well - I saw her at quite a few of the Eddie shows, she's fantastic at following him around! Hey Liz - thanks for the kindness - and I am sorry for *our* loss, as I know we all felt a love for Dorene. - Eddie's Independent Spirit -- Amy, 01/26/10 9:15am
Eddie Izzard to dress up the Independent Spirit Awards
Posted on Monday, Jan 25, 2010 By Gregory Ellwood
Eddie Izzard is the new host of the 25th Independent Spirit Awards.
Eddie Izzard will make his debut as Independent Spirit Awards host on March 5.
The 25th Independent Spirit Awards are celebrating half a century of recognizing independent cinema with a brand new host, none other than Eddie Izzard.
The Brit comedian is best known for is sophisticated and smart stand up act -- that he usually performs in drag -- but Izzard has numerous film credits including "Valkyrie," "Ocean's Thirteen," "Across the Universe" and "Romance and Cigarettes" just to name a few. He also starred in the FX television series "The Riches" and is currently finishing his "Stripped Too" tour across the U.S. and U.K.
After Steve Coogan's solid, but not really memorable run as host last year, Izzard is a very inspired choice. He's incredibly comfortable on stage and should bring some whit to the proceedings without insulting the audience like Gervais did in his disappointing Golden Globes run last week (sigh). To say we're looking forward to Izzard taking the podium is an understatement.
The Independent Spirit Awards will take place on Friday, March 5 and air live and uncut on IFC at 8:00 PM PST/ 11:00 PM EST.

Saw the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movie the other day - it was fantastico!
You have to suspend belief in what you know Sherlock Holmes to be, you have to imagine him more as a Victorian Batman kind of guy. If you can do that - you will enjoy the movie.
Robert Downey Jr was GORGEOUS and great - Jude Law was an excellent side kick and has VERY blue eyes. Extremely gory in parts - as per Mr. Ritchie's usual style.
Worth the money, IMHO.

Status Quo Vadis
As any good poem is always ending,
The fence looks best when it first needs mending.
Weathered, it hints it will fall to pieces —
One day, not yet, but the chance increases
With each nail rusting and grey plank bending.
It's not a wonder if it never ceases.
In beauty's bloom you can see time burning:
A lesson learned while your guts are churning.
Her soft, sweet cheek shows the clear blood flowing
Towards the day when her looks are going
Solely to prove there is no returning
The way they came. There's a trade wind blowing.
We know all this yet we love forever.
Build her a fence and she'll think you're clever.
Write her a poem that's just beginning
From start to finish. You'll wind up winning
Her heart, perhaps, but be sure you'll never
Hold on to the rainbow the top sets spinning.
What top? The tin one that starts to shiver
Already, and soon will clatter. The river
Of colour dries up and your mother's calling
Your name while the ball hasn't finished falling,
And you miss the catch and you don't forgive her.
You went out smiling but you go home bawling.
Weep all you like. Earn your bread from weeping.
Write reams explaining there is no keeping
The toys on loan, and proclaim their seeming
Eternal glory is just the dreaming
We do pretending that we aren't sleeping —
Your tears are stinging? They're diamonds gleaming.
Think of it that way and reap the splendour
That flares reflected in the chromium fender
Of the Chrysler parked in the concrete crescent.
The surge is endless, the sigh incessant.
A revelation can only tender
Sincere regrets from the evanescent.
Remember this when it floods yours senses
With streams of light and the glare condenses
Into a star. It's a star that chills you.
Don't fool yourself that the blaze fulfils you
And builds your bridges and mends your fences
Merely because of the way it thrills you —
The breath of life is what finally kills you.

- At your local Target store... -- gumtree, 01/10/10 10:14pm
SHOPPING
After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Target. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse. Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Target.
Dear Mrs. Samuel,
Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Samuel, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras.
1.June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking.
2.July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.
3.July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom.
4.July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money.
5.August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.
6.August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area.
7.August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged.
8.August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs were called.
9.September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.
10.September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the
antidepressants were.
11.October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the 'Mission Impossible' theme.
12.October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna look' by using different sizes of funnels..
13.October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled 'PICK ME! PICK ME!'
14.October 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed 'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!'
And last, but certainly not least:
15.October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here.' One of the clerks passed out.

The meaning what it must of meant to had.

But evolution do not stop for that.

On New Years Eve we are going to have a "blue moon." It won't really be blue, but it is the second full moon this month which doesn't happen a lot, hence the saying: once in a blue moon. Mars is going to be rising with it, so when you look in the east, that red star near the moon is Mars. I think it's cool to have this kind of phenomenon on New Year's Eve. Maybe it will make the coming year extra special for everyone.

We went to the George Clooney movie tonight. He was excellent and the movie was very entertaining. A little depressing at the end, but very entertaining. I about died when I saw one of the previews. It was for a brand new "Clash of the Titans." I don't know if you remember the previous one with Laurence Olivier, Burgess Meredith and Harry Hamlin, but it was very, very good. In the remake the special effects look incredible and Liam Neeson plays either Zeus or Neptune, I couldn't tell which, but it really looks promising. Can't wait for that one. Nothing will be as good as Jason and the Argonauts with the great Ray Harryhausen special effects, but I love this genre of movie. It reminds me of the old Hercules movies with Steve Reeves and staying up late on Saturday night and ordering in pizza.

Well, the boys loved the movie. They described the plot as old fashioned "cowboys and indians." They said the stunning part of the movie was the whole world where these blue elf-like people live. They said the color was so incrdible it was overwhelming. The final battle scene must be seen to be believed. Their observation was that Industrial Light and Magic(George Lucas) must be scrambling to figure out how they are going to catch up to this new technology. It sounds like the movie was a huge escape into an imaginary world.

A deli woman agreed that the taste and throb/ptyalism effect of that particular cheddar was amazing but that, apparently, it was a sign of bad mixing, or too much ammonia, or something.

Izzard To Tackle Ironman Triathlon
Eddie Izzard is determined to push himself to his peak fitness after recently finishing 43 consecutive marathons - he's now undergoing training to compete in a triathlon.
The Valkyrie star has become obsessed with exercise after finishing a mammoth seven-week run across the U.K. in September as part of a fundraising campaign.
And Izzard has already plotted his next challenge - he's set to swim, sprint and cycle in a long-distance triathlon race.
He says, "I've just started up swimming because I want to do Ironman now. It's where you swim for five kilometres, then cycle for 180 kilometres and then you run a marathon after that - all in one go.
"I have (become fascinated with fitness) because there's no point in throwing away all that training. Swimming is really good upper-body (training) so I've been taking lessons. They teach you how to swim properly and that's great. I just want to keep up and get more healthy. Peak fitness at 90 - that's my idea!"
And the funnyman is urging his fellow Britons to get active so they can inspire homegrown athletes who are participating in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
He adds, "We've got the Olympics less than a thousand days ahead and I want to encourage people to take something they used to do when they were a kid and start doing it again. We're all living to about 100 now - unless you want the last 30 years of your life to be going really downhill, get healthy, get fit. Then we can encourage our athletes going into the Olympics to be able to have the fittest country (supporting them)." »

Izzard Honoured For Charity Run
Funnyman Eddie Izzard was honoured for his mammoth charity run earlier this year at a top London awards ceremony on Sunday night.
The actor/comedian was handed the special award at the annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year event, for running 1,100 miles (1,770 kilometers) across the U.K. in 51 days over the summer.
The feat raised more than $300,000 (£200,000) for British charity Sport Relief - and Izzard admitted during his acceptance speech he felt humbled with the honour.
He said, "I'm no athlete. Not like everybody here tonight. It was really tough. Everything was painful. People asked me if I enjoyed the running but I enjoyed the stopping! I staggered, I ran and I crawled." »

- GENE BARRY DIED -- Liz, 12/11/09 10:26am
I hate to post on top of the fabulous celery poetry, but I was a huge fan of Gene Barry. I don't know if anyone else remembers Bat Masterson or Burke's Law or even The Name of the Game, but he was a wonderful television star from the 50's to the 80's. Alway handsome, a fabulous voice and totally suave. In Bat Masterson(a western)he never used a gun: he clubbed people with his gold-topped can while wearing a derby. In Burke's Law, he was a detective who always arrived in a gold rolls royce.
