Hi folks,

I've been reading the threads on the 4 foot leader law that kind of turned into a let's get rid of king salmon in the Salmon river. You guys put some thoughtfull ideas out there but I'd like to put my two cents in.

First....I've fished for King salmon for 30 years from here to Alaska...and I'm here to tell you they bite flies, spoons, plugs, and bait in a river system until they die. They are not an easy fish to catch, but they bite at certain times of the day just like they do in the lake. And in Alaska they don't bite any easier. They are a very worthy adversary on a fly no matter where you fish them. Anybody says they don't bite just hasn't figured it out yet. I'm not bashing anybody...Atlantic Salmon are just as hard...but they can be caught and are looked at as THE fly caught game fish...but they are just as tough.

It's simply a FALSE statement to say kings won't bite. These fish do not loose an instinct that allowed them to grow to such large sizes in three to four years just because they have the urge to spawn. They will bite in crowded conditions. Not as easily as when you find them in a quiet place, but I've had hundreds and hundreds of days where I've caught kings that chased a fly or gulped a bug like a stream brown trout, while fishing shoulder to shoulder. You may have to make many many fly changes and mend adjustments but you can unlock ol' black jaw. Anybody still doubting...you should fish the Genny River here in Rochester in the fall with fresh skein under a float...it's a slug fest. If you have the stamina...you can hook 50 kings a day legal under a float using skein...they bite it like blue gills bite a worm.

OK enough about the biting part...these fish do bite .. What you guys haven't considered..is the lake fishery. The lake fishery is not going to jump on your band wagon to get rid of king salmon. They are just as big a part of this deal as the stream fishermen. So unless the state finds a strain of Atlantic salmon that can provide a sport fishery in open water year after year and return to the doors of the hatchery year after year....forget about getting rid of the kings. I haven't met a lake fishermen yet that will turn his nose up at catching kings in the lake. They are the most sought after salmonid you can fish for.

So what to do? EDUCATION my friends. Those that don't know how to fish for kings in streams can learn how. There are plenty of us there that are willing to help. I belong to LOSA...Lake Ontario Steelhead assoc. but we are interested in all salmonids that inhabit our streams and we have many many experienced anglers who catch loads of kings in the LO tribs. We can't get rid of the crowds. As long as an angler buys a license...and fishes leagally they have a right to come to our waters and fish. If all those anglers are fishing smart...Not standing over the fish...not plunking a ton of lead on their heads they will find biting fish...it's pretty simple. Good knowledgeable salmon anglers get into fish on a regular basis.

I've left my E-mail address with this post...I welcome anyone who'd like to talk kings on a fly ..or bait..or even plugs...write me and I'll be happy to discuss. I don't think there is a good case to get rid of king salmon. Personally I love them fishing a spey rod and swinging flies at them. I think they are a lot of fun. Got to think about the lake guys...they have as many fishing rights as you guys do. We are all in this together.
