So this is the new chatboard!

Well, I'm reading "The Mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley and DW would make a sublime Gorlois. I can hear him speaking the lines. Alas, the mini series on TNT is already in the works, undoubtedly nearing completion and I'm sure the producers didn't agree with my casting.

sigh.

Hey! Long time no see!! Yeah, I'm loving it too. She wrote another one about the Trojan War. That's next on my reading list. I'm going to buy "Mists"...

Does everyone else know about the chatboard? They should check the site more often, methinks... :)

DW, Arthurian legends ... What an awesome combination that would be! Well, the book's always better than the movie anyway, so (especially after The Island) it's probably better left to our imaginations, right?

But still ... Wish *we* had been the casting directors! But then DW would have been too busy with POTA (being covered up with ape make-up) to do it anyway, huh?

Gorlois? What sort of character is he? I'm not familiar with that legend.

In Arthurinian Legend, Gorlois was the first husband of Igraine of Cornwall. In "Mists of Avalon", Igraine is presented as sister to Viviane, the Lady of The Lake, priestess of The Goddess of Avalon. He is the father of Morgaine (Morgana, Morgan Le Fey) who follows Viviane into priestesshood at Avalon.

At first the character of Gorlois is somewhat sympathetic, kind and gentle, portrayed as Christian as opposed to Igraine's and Viviane's Pagan (Igraine later abandons the Old Religion for Christianity and seeks the convent when her husband King Uther, father of King Arthur dies).

In order to bring about the cycle of events needed to secure the rightful king of England, mainly that Uther must father a son and Igraine, last of the royal line of Avalon must bear that son. Uther is certain to be named High King of England when the present aging king dies. Vivian orchestrates a series of events that cause the upset of Igraine's lot. Igraine sees Uther and realizes that she knew and loved him in a long past life. Uther realizes it too and it doesn't take long for him to become smitten with gentle, demure Igraine.

Gorlois turns into a jealous bastard who beats his wife, his woman, his property when he cannot satisfy his lust upon her.

Gorlois of course, is killed when it is realized that he conspires to commit treason against Uther, to whom he has sworn allegiance.

And oh yeah. There is no way the book will be followed faithfully. It is presented first from a slightly more "feminist" perspective. Not the expected, men bad, women good, more like, women are VERY important, men.

And the pagan aspect. We won't be seeing the ancient rites of Midsummer on TNT in July, when the miniseries airs. That much I can guarantee. If they do, I will be shocked. SHOCKED. It won't happen. It's starkly graphic in the book. These aren't the gentle practices of today's pagans, these are the blood-drenched, sexually explicit fertility rites of the ancients.

There is much talk and praise of the Goddess in the book and that will not sit well with censors, I think. I don't know how the producers are going to pull this one off. The book is magnificent. The most satisfying read I've had in years.

This is not Boorman's Excalibur, and it ain't yer daddy's King Arthur.

I highly, absolutely reccommend this book. The mini-series is anyone's guess.

I think we will probably be disappointed by the mini-series. I too, have read The Mists of Avalon (twice now, and I am due to re-read it soon!) It is absolutely my all-
time favourite book and should definately be read by all women! Nice to see it mentioned here on the board. I bought it when it came out in the trade size in the early '80's, then read it again about 6 or 7 years later.

Read it....you'll be glad you did!!

Likewise! Nice meeting you too. Your wonderful description of the book has made me take it off the bookshelf and dust it off! I'm just finishing another old favourite, Jamaica Inn. Hadn't read that one in years as well.

Wow, Jamaica Inn--Is that Nathaniel Hawthorne? Forgive my ignorance. I just woke up and again, I'm sans caffeine.

I've actually been considering reading that myself...but I have "Firebrand" by Ms. Bradley next on my list of must read. That is the story of the events of the Trojan War through the eyes of Kassandra (Cassandra) the prophetess who fortold events but because she was cursed, no one believed her. The story is told once again through the eyes of the women involved in the Trojan War, namely Helen of Troy and Kassandra. (I've studied Greek mythology since I was in elementary school and after reading "Mists Of Avalon I am *BRISTLING* to read "Firebrand"!!!!!

We seem to get the nicest people here in DW appreciation land. Hope to see you often and do stop by the chatroom. *hoping there's a link to it on Louise's site because remembering URL at this point in my day is not going to happen*....

I better go make a pot of coffee.

Jamaica Inn was written by Daphne du Maurier. Oh, to switch back to The Mists of Avalon, I also have it on audio tape read by Natasha Richardson.
BTW did you enjoy your coffee?!!

... and it's my all-time favorite book. Which came about because my other favorite actor, Robert Newton, was in Hitchcock's 1939 movie version (which bore little resemblance to the book). It was the forerunner to Rebecca, but I think it's even better.

Hmm, what role could DW have played in a faithful film version? Ah! What about Reverend Davey? (With Newton as Uncle Joss!)

It looks like The Witches Voice Website is going to endorse--i.e., praise the series. Like myself, they think the trailer sounds good. Angelica Houston plays Vivian, I think. That sounds really good to me. Sorry I don't mean to turn this into "The Mists of Avalon" Chatboard....

Sorry but while I appreciated the author's concept I couldn't actually finish the book (lovely cover illo though). However, the one thing I do remember (and was about to bring up but you beat me to it) was, there was a merlin, and he was quite droll but had dramatic moments as well. Much better than another spouse-abuser role. Did someone else get that part? Shame if so.

The only casting I know about is that of the female leads and that of King Arthur. No clue as to who will be the Merlin and Gorlois.

Too bad you didn't like the book Jen, but to each their own, right?

Thanks to you all, I just had to read the book for myself, so I picked it up at the library yesterday--it's so popular I had to place a hold on it! Unfortunately, I read so slowly I'll never finish it before it's due back, so if I like it, I'll have to buy a copy. *Or* ...

But, coincidentally, I mentioned the book to a male friend, and I was surprised that he'd heard of it ... In fact, he invited me to borrow *his* copy. He read it 15 years ago and loved it! I'm astounded, especially after Wini's comment that all women should read it, because this is the same guy who complained that The Sixth Sense was a "chick flick"!

Don't hold your breath for my review though; the way I read, it could be *years* before I get back to you! It's a thick one (like me)! ;-)

I'm sure there'll be room for DW to play more than one character in my imagination! Merlin, Gorlois ... Hey, if he can do it in Quest of the Delta Knights ...

Hey Suky!
We'll read it together. My re-reading it is more like reading it for the first time, what with my great memory. With so little time for "pleasure reading", my pace sounds exactly like yours. (So what else is knew!)

It was great to hear that some male friends out there have read and enjoyed it too. Boy, I hope I didn't offend anyone out there with that comment!

Wini,

just to let you know--it's not easy to offend us. There was nothing wrong with your comment. I'm thrilled to hear that men like "Avalon", but I definitely agree that all women should read it. :)
