It was Johnny Williams for sure. I have an October 1974 aircheck of Mike McGann in which he plugs O'Brien and Garry together on the morning show, so that must have been part of the test run mentioned here.

At the time I thought KQV's teaming of Joe Fenn and George Hart as Coal and Steel may have had something to do with it, but the pairs' styles of humor were quite dissimilar, as were their dayparts (Coal and Steel's "head" comedy being well suited to their time slot of 10:30 pm-1:30 am).
