1973 was a pivotal year in Pittsburgh radio. 13Q came in and made a huge splash with their initial cash giveaway. They knocked KQV for a loop. Their decision to take WSHH easy listening led WWSW-FM to become WPEZ. Ted Atkins came to town and made the best use of WTAE's considerable talent roster with a solid gold-based music format. He also gave the nightly hour of sports talk to Myron Cope. KDKA plucked John Cigna from the remnants of WJAS and also launched its "Someplace Special" marketing campaign that was so successful. WWSW-AM put a heavy news/information block in morning drive to compete with KDKA.
