Absolutely agree that John Rook was the key PD in KQV's Top 40 years. His handling of Beatle-mania was brilliant.

He once told me that KQV at one time or another beat KDKA in every significant daypart aside from morning drive. I have no reason to doubt him. That was an incredible accomplishment given the difference in signals. Rook said that he wanted to have a machine competing against KDKA, and he did.

He used to call the differences "east coast radio vs. west coast radio." He said east coast radio was talk a while, play a record, talk a while, play another record. His concept of "west coast radio" was to keep everything moving quickly.
