You're right, KDKA was more of a personality-oriented station than a format-oriented one the way KQV always had been. That was also true of the other Westinghouse stations I'm familiar with from that era, KYW and (thanks to airchecks — good luck pulling it in from Pittsburgh) WBZ.

John Rook was, I always thought, the best PD that KQV ever had. Many innovative concepts and astute counterprogramming measures. I believe KQV actually beat KDKA in the ratings on more than one occasion during his time there.

I dug out Gary Waight's airchecks from 1969 and listened to them again, and Clark Race was definitely in that 2 to 5 pm slot by then.
