In reply to: Old Lion 's message, "Columbia baseball update" on 10:03:38 05/25/25 Sun

One of the most exciting wins in the history of the Ivy League! Columbia dominated an excellent Southern Mississippi Team in their home ballpark in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. SUPER GREEK GOD CONGRATULATIONS TO THE COLUMBIA BASEBAALL PLAYERS, THE COLUMBIA COACHING STAFF AND TO MY VERY GOOD FRIEND VALMAS!

Highly recommended —Brett, Lazits and Estabrook fielded questions about how an IL team can compete against D1 scholarship schools—great job by all three.

The Lions dominant performance in their upset victory over 14th ranked Southern Mississippi was handled with a lot of class by Southern Mississippi's Head Coach Christian Ostrander in the postgame press conference. Coach Ostrander acknowledged that Columbia simply outplayed Southern Miss in all aspects of the game, without getting into all the "D1" stuff. Tonight's game with Miami should be a good one.

EXACTLY ten years ago today, Columbia baseball capped off it's most successful of one-hundred
thirty-seven baseball seasons, with a 3-0 NCAA tournament victory against University of Miami, in a game played in Coral Gables, FL. Though the Hurricanes came back and ended Columbia's season two days later, his three NCAA tournament wins in 2015 were foundational for everything Brett Boretti's done at Columbia since. And one kid the Lions got steadfast production from in 2015 was another Greek American right-hander, George Thanopoulos from Highland, CA. Thanopoulos was eventually drafted by the Mets and has served as a pitching coach at various West Coast ports of entry; ever since his playing career ended.
Now, I don't know if Alex Sotiropoulos could possibly be available later today; he having pitched three and two-thirds, relief shutout frames last night and for the win; however, Miami head coach, J.D. Arteaga has been part of the Hurricanes' staff these last twenty-two years. Not that I'm a betting man, though I'd doubt the events of ten years ago could be completely lost on Coach Arteaga; and, if he hasn't already done so, I'd surely expect Arteaga to offer his current players a brief history lesson, sometime before 8 pm, E.S.T., this evening.
