Columbia swept PL champ HC in a resounding performance—21 runs scored including 5 home runs in the doubleheader. If the pitching can hold up is this the year to make some noise in the NCAAs? Brett Boretti may have coached his way to one of his best seasons, after losing three all Ivy caliber players in the first game of the season.

The NCAA Baseball Selection Show is on ESPN2 now and it has just been announced that our Ivy League Championship Team will play the 16th ranked nationally Southern Miss in the first round of the Hattiesburg Regional. Southern Miss is the host team for the Hattiesburg Regional which also includes the University of Alabama and the University of Miami.

So far, the Lions have allowed only three hits -
none in two and two-thirds of relief provided by Greek God, Floridian soph, Alex Sotiropoulos!

Sotiropoulos gave up just a bloop single in the seventh; giving way after 3 2/3 to Tomas Perez, Redondo Beach, CA, lefty soph, who gave up but an unearned run in the eighth. Meanwhile, the Lions added to their run total via two home run balls: one courtesy of Pittsfield, Mass., senior rightfielder, Anton Lazits, appropriately enough to rightfield; and a massive two-run homer to centerfield, off the bat of soph catcher, Owen Westbrook, of Santa Barbara, CA.

Columbia added two more runs in the top of the ninth and Lopez (NOT Perez) got the last three outs of the game, fairly efficiently. Final score, Columbia, 11 - Southern Mississippi, 4. The Lions move on to play Alabama or Miami, and this is getting more and more interesting.

Columbia soundly beat a ranked Southern Miss team on their home field with a big home crowd.

Many thanks to Valmas for the details on the Lion players.

Miami next at 9pm EST Saturday (tonight)

Columbia's soph catcher from Santa Barbara is Owen Estabrook; NOT Westbrook as I misstated, last night. Now that I'm, for the moment, in Mountain Lion's good graces, I've got to work hard to stay there - considering the way that guy sours on people at the drop of a hat. One minute, you're the GREAT Jim Engles (practically a CU tenured-track Professor, and the LATE (figuratively speaking, of course) Jim Engles, the next!

SM had a huge home crowd, to be expected, but college baseball is very popular in the south. In any event, very impressive win in which the humidity seemed to have an impact. Brett went to the bullpen at the first sign that Edwards might have started to tire out in the bottom on the 4th. Interesting choice in going with Edwards and holding back Santana and Sheets.

Two more Miami homers have the Hurricanes up by a dozen. Columbia's been held down by Miami junior starter and Florida native, Griffin Hugus. He's thrown 113 pitches through eight innings; walked only one Columbia batter and permitted just three extra base hits. With the Lions down to their final three outs, it'll be interesting to see if the Miami coaches allow Hugus to attempt a complete game performance.

One of the most exciting wins in the history of the Ivy League! Columbia dominated an excellent Southern Mississippi Team in their home ballpark in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. SUPER GREEK GOD CONGRATULATIONS TO THE COLUMBIA BASEBAALL PLAYERS, THE COLUMBIA COACHING STAFF AND TO MY VERY GOOD FRIEND VALMAS!

Highly recommended —Brett, Lazits and Estabrook fielded questions about how an IL team can compete against D1 scholarship schools—great job by all three.

The Lions dominant performance in their upset victory over 14th ranked Southern Mississippi was handled with a lot of class by Southern Mississippi's Head Coach Christian Ostrander in the postgame press conference. Coach Ostrander acknowledged that Columbia simply outplayed Southern Miss in all aspects of the game, without getting into all the "D1" stuff. Tonight's game with Miami should be a good one.

EXACTLY ten years ago today, Columbia baseball capped off it's most successful of one-hundred
thirty-seven baseball seasons, with a 3-0 NCAA tournament victory against University of Miami, in a game played in Coral Gables, FL. Though the Hurricanes came back and ended Columbia's season two days later, his three NCAA tournament wins in 2015 were foundational for everything Brett Boretti's done at Columbia since. And one kid the Lions got steadfast production from in 2015 was another Greek American right-hander, George Thanopoulos from Highland, CA. Thanopoulos was eventually drafted by the Mets and has served as a pitching coach at various West Coast ports of entry; ever since his playing career ended.
Now, I don't know if Alex Sotiropoulos could possibly be available later today; he having pitched three and two-thirds, relief shutout frames last night and for the win; however, Miami head coach, J.D. Arteaga has been part of the Hurricanes' staff these last twenty-two years. Not that I'm a betting man, though I'd doubt the events of ten years ago could be completely lost on Coach Arteaga; and, if he hasn't already done so, I'd surely expect Arteaga to offer his current players a brief history lesson, sometime before 8 pm, E.S.T., this evening.

The junior right-hander from The Pingry School in New Jersey has already thrown twenty-four pitches; not gotten anyone out; and given up 5 hits and 3 runs. 3-0 Miami, still bottom one.

Thomas Santana, after all, was first team Ivy League. So, he got out of the first, giving up only one more run via a wild pitch. The Lions failed to score again in the second. 4-0 Hurricanes, bottom 2 and the NYK are down a down a dozen, midway through the third quarter in Indianapolis. Still plenty of time tonight for both New York entries to show what got them there!

he gets out of the third, unscathed. Still 4-0 Hurricanes, top four. Meanwhile, the NYK can't seem to close a ten point gap in Indy and it's getting late.

A couple of extra base hits permitted the Hurricanes to create four more runs of separation from the Blue. 8-1 Miami, bottom five and still a lot of time left for Columbia to flip the switch. However, the Knicks season has ended in Indianapolis - the NYK enjoyed a credible run in 24-25 and with a number a young star players still in their prime years, New York's future appears bright; and I'll applaud the Indiana Pacers - a team with a forever loyal fan base that's never won an NBA championship, despite having participated for forty-nine seasons in the league. It could at long last be their time.

The good news is that Columbia needn't worry about ever seeing Griffin Hugus at 60 feet, 6 inches, in 2025, again. Hugus got his complete game; throwing an economic 122 pitches - about 14 pitches per inning. And now Columbia has an elimination game to look forward to on Sunday, June 1 and to be played against Southern Mississippi. I foresee the pride of Delaware, senior Joe Sheets taking the ball and looking to extend Columbia's season till at least June 2nd; having Alex Sotiropoulos waiting in the wings; if and when he's called upon.

so the magical season ended, not with a roar but with a whimper, as per TS Eliot. But that should take nothing away from a great season, starting with three huge injuries to three critical guys, tow of who were out for the year Leion, our best pitcher, and Jeong, an all Ivy caliber infielder). Yesterday’s game was atypical for us; starting pitching with Sheets was fine, but the relievers didn’t get it done, and our bats were silent, while our fielding errors were costly. Classy post game performance in the presser by Brett and company.
