If seven wins over Cornell, six over Yale and six over Princeton doesn’t earn you a pass, not quite sure what does.

Seemed like in recent years Penn had a habit of starting strong and then fading. Also I read somewhere that he was not, as they say, on the same page as the players - no idea if that's accurate. He was a good recruiter up until the end.

In any case I hope they have some ideas about replacements. Late in the cycle to be looking for a replacement.

I defer to those who know both the college lacrosse world better and the innards of Penn athletics. But even at this hour, while perhaps not ideal timing, I would think that Penn MLAX will attract very solid applicants, minus those, of course, who already took their HC positions after this spring. Would you not think DIII HCs, D1 assistants, as well as HC at D1 programs farther down the D1 Lax foodchain form a good pool of potential Penn HCs?

Brown had a disappointing experience hiring a previously highly successful D3 coach (Mike Daly) from perennial national contender Tufts, a move that I had expected (wrongly, as it turned out) would work out well. On the other hand, Penn had good success with Murphy for most of his tenure, coming from D3 Haverford, and the Tigers' Madalon had previously been at D3 Stevens. So IMO that avenue is a mixed bag.

There are good candidates, but some of them may be reluctant to move at this point in the recruiting cycle, or they may think (especially if they are D1 assistants) they might be in line for some of the glamour positions that will open next year. And as the IL is becoming increasingly competitive, a coach might prefer a place where it is not as hard to get to the NCAAs, which is probably the standard they will be held to. Not to mention, as with any ivy sport, taking on challenge of mastering the ivy admissions process.

Of course Penn's brand is strong, regardless, so I don't expect them to struggle even if the hire is not their first choice. But I think delays will affect recruiting in the short run. Competition for the big guns is intense and every school has already nominally filled its '26 HS grad classes. Recruiting for '27 is probably far along as most summer recruiting camps have already taken place.

As always I'm just a casual observer and Penn fans may have very different, and more accurate, POVs on any of the above.

Thanks. All good thoughts. The recruiting cycle concern is good to mention. In that connection I wonder if any Penn commits bolt, a risk that might increase the longer the vacancy exists. But as you say the brand is fairly strong and any hit in this regard might be manageable. It was my impression decades ago that a new P coach would get a little more cooperation from Admissions than otherwise in his first recruiting class so that could be a mitigating factor for a new coach here if that is a thing at Penn, although I wouldn’t know.

Agreed you can misfire in hiring from any of the categories of potential HCs, but I would still think Penn has a very good chance of making a good hire. They have hired a search firm to assist. I am not sure P ADs have ever done that. They have put together their own advisory groups for some searches,
