 It’s not to start early, it’s to start earlier. Consider the context. Dartmouth last year did not start its football camp until August 24. So they are still more than several weeks away from starting camp. Most, if not all, division one programs are already in camp at this point.

You could interpret this meme to mean the players enjoy waiting in anticipation at home for several more weeks while their week one opponents are already busy preparing. I think the players and coaches want to be preparing now to start the season on an equal footing. They want to be physically present where they are mentally.
