Looks like they are making a statement about the Ivy League’s extremely late start to the season. Players want to be in camp now.

Thanks, Son of Eli.

It makes no sense to not start earlier and build in an off week during the season.

Let's use the specific example of our 2025 Ivy football schedule that starts the season on Saturday, September 20th (two weeks after others in FCS). If we start the season with the first game on Saturday, September 13th, we could have the entire league take the weekend off on Saturday, October 18th. In turn, this would allow the coaches to give their players three full days off after their game on Saturday, October 11th game with the players returning to practice on Wednesday, October 15th. Note that this still would allow 10 full days to prepare their players for their next game schedule on Saturday, October 25th. This would be the equivalent of a mid-season reading period for Ivy football players and help offset any grumbling about extending the season for the FCS playoffs participation. As a former student athlete, I vividly remember using reading period to catch up on class materials I could not fully cover during the season.

Ivy Administrators would have a hard time voting against this change since it is far, far better for student athletes from an academic perspective. It outs the student first in being a student athlete.

Better yet, start two weeks earlier and add an 11th game with a bye. A bye is more important now than ever with the playoffs. Ivy league will be at a disadvantage playing eleven plus straight weeks.

Call me contrarian, but all I see is anticipation for the coming camp, not a call to start early. Nice setting though.

Dartmouth has long been thought to have among the worst football facilities in the Ivy. But that was simply another way of saying that Memorial Field didn't compare favorably to the Yale Bowl, Franklin Field, Harvard Stadium, Palmer Field/Princeton Stadium, and others.

I've always countered that there is more to facilities than just the stadium. Dartmouth's old practice fields were absolutely awesome with the Upper Valley mountains in the background. During peak foliage, it was such a treat to practice there...

It’s not to start early, it’s to start earlier. Consider the context. Dartmouth last year did not start its football camp until August 24. So they are still more than several weeks away from starting camp. Most, if not all, division one programs are already in camp at this point.

You could interpret this meme to mean the players enjoy waiting in anticipation at home for several more weeks while their week one opponents are already busy preparing. I think the players and coaches want to be preparing now to start the season on an equal footing. They want to be physically present where they are mentally.
