I've often thought that there was a change of Story Plan back when the Writers strike was on.

After Meg "miscarried" she acted a little oddly AND there were several shots of her stomach in profile ... and when she was holding herself ... where she still looked pregnant to ME. My thought is "what if" the original story was going to go ahead with her hiding her pregnancy to protect the baby from further machinations from Craig? And of course that would involve all kinds of Soapy drama with Paul.

And then "what if" ... when the writers got back, CG decided that because of all the awful twists and turns with Craig ... that the miscarriage should stand ... so that Paul and Meg could have a baby later on that would not be "tainted" with all mixed signals that Craig's involvement curtailed.

That's my theory ... GRIN! Because, it is incredible to me that Paul STILL doesn't have an heir, and that Meg would be doomed to chidlessness.
