Foolish ... but a beautiful hope. I can not fault Paul for it.
And it was another Hope that kept Paul from stopping Derek in the beginning. How could he know that James, in his insanity ... was going to use Derek to put Paul's life in jeopardy. And NOT care if Paul lived or died. Paul, not realizing this, logically thought it was just another scare tactic by Derek to get his money. In any case ... it was a no win situation unless Paul killed Derek. And Paul really isn't a killer, regardless of his assault on Craig. And Derek? I don't care how ambivalent he was about James later on in the cellar. Derek is unsalvageable to me. He has threatened, intimidated and put into jeopardy too many people to be viable just because James "has something" on him. Derek is despicable.
And Paul and Meg? That altercation was GREATNESS! Paul made it very clear about WHY he has hidden things from Meg. Why in fact, their relationship has seemed so conditional to him. And it's true. AND it's a truth that Meg seems to have finally realized. Meg LOVES Paul ... maybe now she will understand what Love really means.
" ... love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no, it is an ever-fixèd mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken ..."
I have every confidence that she will.
And Paul? He has loved Meg, and accepted Meg through all the trials and tribulations of these past few years. He's been Meg's ever-fixed mark. God help you, Meg? No ... God love him. Because ... melt melt melt ... I sure do. Hee!
