Subject: My Three Sons Work Ethic

I was just thinking about how much WORK is a dominating theme in the "My Three Sons" series.

The kids always had various jobs(especially if they needed money for something) Bub and Uncle Charley took care of the house and kids, Steve worked at the plant, Barbara was a teacher, Katie had various temporary jobs and tutored (even when she was pregnant), and Tramp probably brought in the evening newspaper. I can't remember if Polly and Dodie had jobs other than going to school.

I think the show even tried to demonstrate that get rich quick schemes and rushing into things doesn't work. Two examples I can recall of this are episode #225 "Happy Birthday World" in which Robbie's birthday business goes belly up and episode #379 "Barbara Lost" when Chip decides not to become a rock musician for fast cash. I also remember Uncle Charley telling Katie after she married Robbie that one of her most important duties was attending school and not to worry about helping with the housework. She did anyway though!

You don't really see that dedication to work and togetherness in a positive way on TV these days. So many of the families are well off and the kids don't really have to work for anything.

Does anyone have any comments on this? Know of any other jobs the characters had?

Thanks for reading my ramblings! Now get back to work.
